This dude came in a bag of mixed Cannas. The 5 as labeled were all there along with this bonus of sorts.

Developing seed or ??? Shrug!

Never got anything like it with mixed cannas before and the only other stuff I dig holes for this time of year are glads so I'm stumped. Checked a bunch of pics via Google and Holland Bulbs and didn't find a suitable match...

It's going in the ground one way or another...

Hmm, guess it's not much of one.

Maybe I'll pick up some more to plant with it!

Looks that way! Very nice assortment!

I've admired them but just never bothered trying dahlias having been content with cannas, glads, and seed varieties. Might as well jump in with more than just one.

It should get bigger! As soon as it makes a leaf, you should know if that's what it is or not, that's what it looks like to me too, Dahlia. It's difficult to stake these if you wait until they are big, more likely to break than bend.

I'd go ahead and put a tomato cage or some other kind of stake when you plant it. You won't forget where it is, or that it's there. Tying the stem to something has always led to the heartbreak of a broken plant, I don't recommend that method. Tomato cages are fugly, but I don't see them once Dahlia makes a flower.

Even after moving here where they don't need to be dug and stored, they toppled when I left them 'naked.' We do get high winds from tropical storms and hurricane remnants, other locations might have better luck with unstaked plants.
The golden rule: Do to others only that which you would have done to you.

Thanks for the tomato cage advise Tiffany! I still need to pick up a package to add to this lone bulb/tuber but I have a few used cages handy. I've been guilty of using fishing line to tie top-heavy lilies just fine but it's good to know that's not a good option for dahlias. Cages are fine, it'll leave the next door neighbors wondering!
