A while back someone asked about controlling flying insects without using insecticides. I use "White Fly and Aphid Trap", manufactured by Biocare and/or "Sticky Stakes" and "Sticky Whitefly Trap" manufactured by Safer. All of them are yellow cards coated with a super-sticky surface. The Sticky Stakes are used adjacent to specific plants and the traps are used to control flying insects in a general area. All of these are non-toxic. The insects are drawn to the "yellow" and once they touch the card's surface, they are toast. Below are several pictures showing two cards that have been in my "Orchid" greenhouse for three months, and a new card, just hung a couple of hours before the photo. You can only see perhaps 50% of the (stuck-on) insects because of their tiny size. The cards are two sided, so both sides look the same. There are probably 100 insects on each side of these two cards.

I use these too, only thing I hate is sometimes the Anoles get stuck to them, and they are good insect control also.

Oddly enough, I had my first encounter with a lizard getting stuck on one of the Sticky Cards, but it was not one of the cards that I hang. Those would be very hard for a lizard to get to. The one that got stuck was a huge lizard, perhaps 8-10" long, larger around than my thumb, and a glossy-brown in color. I am sure someone knows what kind of lizard that is. Anyway, I literally had to carefully use a knife to remove it. All four legs, all the tummy, the tail, and the bottom of the head were stuck fast. It would have simply died if I did not remove it from its capture. That sticky card was a white one, is meant to be placed on the floor, and captures crawling insects on the porch. I had two extra and simply put them on the floor of the "Everything Else" greenhouse. I thought they might catch a roach, spider, or whatever. I never thought about a lizard. I have removed those from the greenhouse.

I should have taken a picture. It would have been really neat.

I've had them get stuck on ones that were hanging from the middle of the greenhouse. I think they crawl down the wire hanger to the trap after the flies.
Fortunately it doesn't happen too often. I tried to remove one once.........wasn't a pretty picture. Sad

They are very hard to remove. Every time I would get the knife blade under a foot and release the foot, I would place a small piece of plain paper between the foot and the sticky surface so that it would not stick again. I did this foot-by-foot, then an inch of the tail at a time, and then - well you understand. Finally I had ruined the sticky surface with so many pieces of paper but the lizard was freed that way. Being a dentist might have helped. I am used to working in small spaces and handling instruments.

If I remember correctly, vegetable oil is used to release hapless critters in glue traps - you want to do it in an enclosed space since once the critter is release you need to get some dish soap like Dawn and wash off the vegetable oil.

Now you tell me! There's no way that big ole lizard was going to hang around for me to wash him. LOL

I think the lizard escaped back into his world - outside the greenhouse. He looked to be fine. Just a shorter tail. LOL

Oh, good to know about using the vegetable oil! Now I'll know how to rescue DH from my wasp traps. Hilarious!
