Don't think anything was killed in my yard except some Curcuma bulbs, but there's a few palm trees and Cycads around the area that have no sign of life. Did you lose anything because of the extreme winter?

Yes, I lost some lantanas I forgot to mulch. My curcumas survived fine, they just took forever to sprout. I'm missing a torch lily I planted last year. I don't remember which one. Around this area bottle brush shrubs are toast.

Of dozens of 'Shampoo' gingers, I think one has survived. I uncovered the rhizomes yesterday and only one tiny shoot was present. All the other rhizomes were mushy - not a good sign.

OMG! I was regretting not putting my gingers in the ground. Because of pain I wasn't able to do much digging last year. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise. Funny thing though, I had my shampoo ginger rhizhomes in a large pot which I took into the garage overwinter, but most of them rotted. I should have made sure the the pot had dried out or taken the rhizhomes out to dry before storage. Lesson learned. But then again, we had such an extremely cold and wet winter.

My 'White Butterfly' gingers and 'Sunset' canna did fine. Just the 'Shampoo' was affected.

Since I first posted this, I've noticed some dead Photinia shrubs out there, and a pretty palm tree I drive by often is still all brown. Maybe the Cucurmas did come up at the other house after we moved at the end of April. I hope so! I can't drive by, in case they aren't appreciating the plants I left.

Tiffany, they probably did come up. Mine did. They just didn't bloom. Maybe next year. I believe that Heydiciums can handle more cold and wet than the alpinias. I have a red ginger, alpinia, that I have been warned to keep inside over the winter. It can not handle any cold. I wonder how well the less hardy gingers will do if I covered the mulch with plastic and weighed or pinned the sides down after the frost knocks them down, instead of digging them up and storing them. Shrug! For the last 3 years, I have let my spiral ginger go dormant in the garage, and that's worked out well. Except, I have yet to see it bloom.

Let's just hope this winter isn't as cruel. I know what the Farmer's Almanac says, but they are occasionally, very occasionally, wrong. Hoping!

Deborah, IDK anything about gingers, but wouldn't put anything under plastic like that. To zone-cheat, a huge pile of leaves can work wonders. Dark color containers of water, a surround of dark pavers, depending on what the spot will allow. Whatever you decide, I hope it works well!

Deebie, I agree, skip the plastic. I only grow two gingers, the 'White Butterfly' and the 'Shampoo'. The butterfly did well last winter but the shampoo was very late coming up and even then, had really stunted growth. The butterfly has bloomed well and the shampoo won't. I covered them both with a foot or so of oak leaves and nothing more.

The shampoo is in mostly shade, and I'm going to move it this fall so that it gets much more sun. At least that will help warm the soil better during the winter months.

Thanks, Ken. I have plenty of oak leaves. Since it's so late in the year and my shampoo is still in a pot recovering, I'll let it go dormant in the garage and plant it next year. This year has been a terrible gardening year for me because of problems with degenerative disk disease and sciatica. I received a lot of new plants that I haven't been able to get in the ground, as I was waiting around for hopeful relief from treatments. Looks like I won't be getting any, anytime soon. I'll have to explore different options. Now we are having fall weather already and I'm in no way prepared. My houseplants are still outside, it's raining and supposed to get down to 57 tonight. Thumbs down

I can sympathize with you, Deebie. I had L5-S1 surgery for a twice-ruptured disc way back in 1991. I had such severe sciatic symptoms I was literally dragging one foot. Being a dentist, I could not take anything stronger than Advil but being a "one-legged" dentist made working difficult as well as painful. Thus the surgery. That disc has re-ruptured (probably 5 years ago) but now I am sure both sides have ruptured. I have sciatic pain on both sides now and just live with it (for now). I have had back problems and pain for fifty years and I can manage a lot of pain......... Sticking tongue out

I wish that I could handle the pain. My problem is that I have fibromyalgia (20 yrs) along with severe arthritis in both hips. I was told that surgery will not help me and I need to consider a SCS. Shrug! Right now, I take a lot of pain medication, just to have a fairly normal life. Thumbs down Hopefully we'll have a drier day tomorrow and I can get some gardening done. Happy fall gardening, and wishing everyone a mild winter! Smiling

Ken and Deborah, I feel your pain, literally! Same issues with back pain, pain radiating down my right leg. Using a shovel really amps up the pain. I can't squat for long at ALL, and more than a couple hours of driving is not good. I haven't picked up anything heavier than a basket of laundry for a few years. Wishing everyone a 'good back' day!!

It got almost that cold here last night, 59. Not really that cold, but sure feels it after sweating at 93 deg. yesterday. After coffee, I hope I find myself outside doing something productive. No excuses, unless I come up with a new one - LOL!

As for the topic of this discussion, the damaged palm trees still look dead, some have been removed. Some of the damaged Cycads around town are growing new tops from the base. And yesterday I realized that in general, Cannas are pitiful this year. Not sure what % goes to extra cold, what % to about 6 weeks of no rain, but noticed none of the patches I regularly observe 'out there' are as big as they usually are/have been in previous years.

The "Butterfly Ginger" must be the hardiest of all! I have had mine in a pot, simple plastic pot for years. I do think it is time to give it a bit more space. It is amazing no matter how cold it gets, I think it is gone and it comes right back up! We have had some pretty strong freezes, thus surprising me with another year. I will have to learn about the "Shampoo ginger." Once I realized they could go all over my garden, I have just kept it simple in the ginger department! Lots of amaryllis, daylilies, and daffodils though.

Wishing you all improved health for 2015 and happy garden time---even if adapted!

The "Shompoo" is not nearly as hardy as the "Butterfly". All my ginger is in the landscape and none in pots.
