I purchased seeds last summer from a reputable ebay seller. As is typical with Brug seeds, many do not germinate. But I did get a couple to germinate from each cross I purchased. Every single plant now growing looks different. Different leaves, different growth habits, etc. I am waiting patiently for blooms on all of them. One in particular has buds forming. I have never seen or even heard about Brugmansia blooms growing upward. Don't they usually hang down? Or are there some cultivars that do have buds/blooms that point upwards? Can someone clue me in?

My buds all start that way then they drop down after they get a little growth on them.

I have had a number of different cultivars of Brugmansias over the years. Many like the ones I am currently growing were started from seeds. I have never, ever seen a Brug bud/bloom point upward. Even a small bud. I really took a close, hard look at the plant. The leaf texture is different. Much thicker than any of my other Brugs. I am starting to think it might be a Datura - Datura inoxia. When it blooms, I will know more. How that seed got into my germinating cups, I don't know. Unless there was some freak incident with the potting soil (which I have never, ever had anything like this happen using that potting mix). I know the seeds were not in the purchased seeds because I had to hand-peel the Brug seeds and I would have definitely noticed Datura seeds. I don't grow Datura and don't currently have any seeds (nor have I grown it in the past 6 years). So how the heck a Datura got into my collection is beyond me! Until it blooms though .... I won't know.

My other thought was whether or not a Brug could cross with a Datura?

I've seen them with flowers facing up, outwards and down. It depends on the cultivar, I guess. Brugs and Datura are closely related and do cross. Datura flowers face upwards, right?

My big pink ones face outwards and slightly down, but Charles Grimaldi hang straight down, even the buds.

Elaine - Yes! Daturas buds/blooms do face upward. If Brugs and Daturas can cross, perhaps that is what happened here. I hope to see the blooms by the end of the week. The more I examine the plant, the more it looks like a Datura to me. I'll post the bloom photo when it does indeed flower.

Brugs and daturas can be crossed but it is rare and the results of someones careful work,usually in a lab.There was a prominent member of the brug community that claimed to have crossed them a few years back.I grew some of her seed and they were dats in every way.
None of the very few crosses done have resulted in anything worthwhile.
Now,some brugs do have upward facing buds.El Dorado comes to mind.The buds face up and the blooms finish in a horizontal position.

Rhapsody and JT - Thanks for your information. I don't think they can easily cross either. I do think I have a Datura. I have no idea where it could have come from. And I sowed ONLY Brug seeds! Waiting on the blooms. The texture of the leaves has me believing it is NOT a Brug. Plus it does not appear to have as high of a watering need as Brugs. (Another clue it may be a Datura.) If it is, I may grow it out for a while and just cut the blooms off after they wilt. I don't want it re-seeding all over my garden beds. Brugs on the other hand are harder to get blooms to pollinate. We shall see .... I will post photos when it blooms to get everyone's opinion of this plant.

Also, I came across something else that I, personally, have never seen. I saw a bloom stem that had a double on it. I've never seen this before. Two blooms on one stem. How common is that occurrence?

That is interesting. Maybe we will get a nice purple or red warm brug from someones efforts.

I assume it is very rare.I have heard of that but never seen it.

It looks like I may have a few actual blooms within the next day or so. The buds are still upright or leaning just a little horizontal. Still wondering if this is a Brug or Datura plant.

Thanks, Dan! I am starting to think that the Aurea genes are what is confusing me. Wondering now what color the blooms will be. Parents are either peach color or pink. And both parents tend to be double blooms. Should be interesting. I will post photos of the first blooms.

It bloomed tonight and it is definitely a Brug. Not sure yet what the color will be, but I doubt it will stay white as in the photo.



In this photo, you can see 2 more buds which are pointing straight up that are getting ready to bloom soon, too. The leaf texture is thick, almost like a leathery texture. The foliage is very different than what I was expecting. It also does not require nearly as much water as all my other brugs. You can see where the leaf edges turned yellow from too much watering. Since both parents often produce double blooms, it will be interesting to see if any doubles are produced on this plant. The thing that I particularly like about this plant is the blooms have a very soft, almost baby powder scent to it. Not an obnoxiously strong scent like some of my other brugs. Very, very nice! I am pleased with this new seedling!
