I've been vaguely, passively confused about purslane, moss roses, and those plants they sell that look like purslane with differently colored flowers. The latter are often labeled P. oleracea but when one investigates this species, which always has yellow flowers, this doesn't jive. I've been blowing it off as something I just didn't understand, some trick of selective breeding, but this morning I decided to see if I could sort out my confusion.

I encountered this info, in blog form:
http://australianportulaca.blo...

There's a lot more info for those interested, but the crux of it for me is that I've been involved with 3 different plants, when I thought they were only 2, or different versions of those two. And that the third plant is not a cross between P. grandiflora and P. oleracea.

* The edible known as purslane is P. oleracea, and has flat, fat foliage, yellow flowers with 5 petals.
* Those with foliage like 'juicy pine needles' are P. grandiflora, variously colored, multi-petaled flowers.
* The one with foliage that looks like purslane, sold in stores as annuals with variously colored flowers, with varying numbers of petals, is P. umbraticola.

What are your folks' thoughts? Confirmation? Nullification? If this info is correct, it's very helpful, and simple enough for me to understand, remember, and easily differentiate these plants.

It also makes me wonder why they didn't just label "those other ones" P. umbraticola to begin with?! People who buy by sight already wanted them before reading a label, who may never read the label. But they missed the whole segment that buys names, wants every different species of certain genera, and/or very interested in knowing the correct names for the plants they have.

If this is true, some of the pics in the database for both P. oleracea and P. grandiflora should be moved. The good news is that we already have some good pics of P. umbraticola (if true.)

I'm here and Vicki, I asked Dave to make you a moderator here with me. He was kind enough to oblige Rolling on the floor laughing I can't do it all alone.

Tiffany, I'll go check it out and be right back.

One thing I know is that after speaking with nursery employees about the difference between Purslane and Portulaca is that that most have no idea about the true difference.

By the way, I eat the ornamental Purslane (umbraticola) in salads too. Whistling

Green Grin! to Vicki!!!!

Tiffany, I live in Arizona and am a lover of both purslane and portulaca plants, not a horticulturist. It has always been a mystery as to why the names are labeled differently and incorrectly to me too. Moss Rose is another name used for Portulaca and Purslane so it gets crazy. Like calling all spaniels Cocker Spaniels instead of their true breed.

Anyway, I do agree with the author but he needs to go even further since there are so many species in the Portulacaceae (Purslane family).

I agree with him that even โ€œinformedโ€ web sites have the plant labeled incorrectly many times. So we need to remember that just because it's on the web, it isn't always correct. Abraham Lincoln said that. Rolling on the floor laughing

In my own little world, this is how I classify them:

Edible purslane: P. Orelacea = wild plant with small yellow flowers.
Portulaca: P. grandiflora = showy, many colors, spikey leaves, double blooms. Also called Moss Rose all over the country.
Purslane: P. umbraticola = showy, many colors, paddle shaped leaves. My personal favorite.

The site below is a good one I refer to sometimes and you will see so many species. But it is all confusing and so I simply use the three above for my own personal simplified knowledge.
http://eol.org/pages/585728/na...

It would be fun to create my own paper on this sun loving plant but I doubt I will ever have the time to.

TY! I had read your article before posting, and am glad you are here to help.

A couple of the pics that helped fuel my confusion while looking at the P. grandiflora entry in the database are yours. The foliage is not spiky, flowers not double. Why are these not P. umbraticola? What am I missing?

Are other species part of this "moss rose" confusion? I don't think the author of the blog I linked was addressing the whole Portulaca genus, and I'm not asking about that either, just the confusion over "moss roses" (which never would have cropped up if not for common names.) I have P. pilosa but most people don't appreciate or even notice plants/flowers that small, I rescued it from a crack in a parking lot that was about to be resurfaced. I've never seen any other kind of Portulaca (besides P. grandiflora and P. umbraticola) for sale - or have I? There are a couple other Portulaca species in the plant database here that show pics of perfectly attractive plants, but none with flowers that look like moss roses.

Thanks!

I didn't post those names, someone in the plant data base did. So I will address it and see that they change it so at least here on ATP we have the correct names. Thanks for pointing it out. Neither one is grandiflora.

Whistling Vicki.

I don't see a data base forum, just the plant data base and maybe I am missing a page (my dog ate it) but I can't see where to let someone know about a correction.

Tiffany, you are not losing your mind. Hilarious!

In fact, I am going to re-write the purslane article. Trish said I can edit it. It may be a while but I will do it and let you all know when I do. I wrote it 4 years ago before I took writing courses and I know a lot more now. Rolling on the floor laughing

I may or may not be losing my mind, though proof eludes us yet! TY again!

If you are asking about moving the pics, each pic has a link to make such a request. I'm told anyone can do it, but I still feel inappropriate moving other people's pics, at least without their prior knowledge and permission.

While on the subject though, I think all of the plants in the DB entry for P. grandiflora from @plantladylin are P. umbraticola? Then there are some pics from @gingin on P. oleracea that must be P. umbraticola. Three shots of open pink flowers, and this one looks like the bud of the pink flowers:

Putting 'summons' on their names so if it's someone else who moves these pics (should they indeed need to be moved,) they can know about this discussion, and why they were moved. I know I would appreciate knowing (and did feel that way when a pic of mine was helpfully moved in such a manner before.)

Now people will be able to see these 3 plants clearly on ATP - if nowhere else! I KNOW I'm not the only one out there with 'moss rose confusion.' I most sincerely hope I haven't upset anyone, just wanting to understand these plants so I can call them by the most correct names possible. It's not the huge mystery I've thought for years afterall. Once shown the difference, anyone who's seen all 3 should be able to easily distinguish them. They are each so cool, worthy of proper recognition.

Thanks Vicki. I will take care of this later today when I have time to identify the goofs.

Tiffany, I am so glad you pointed these out to us. The data base people often tag the photos, not the people that submit them. I think anyway. Whistling I know I submitted but did not tag the species names.

Tiffany: I get really confused about a lot of plants and especially Portulaca. I think most of the varieties have the common name of Purslane, another common name is Moss Rose.

I always thought Common Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) had only yellow flowers so I was confused to see other colors shown in the database.

And if you view some of the photo's for Moss Rose (Portulaca grandiflora) you will see photo's different leaf types. Confused

I believe some of the photo's at the P. grandiflora entry are actually Kiss Me Quick (Portulaca pilosa)
but I don't really have a clue.

The data base is incorrect in some of the naming, Lin, but I will take time soon to correct where I am sure. I have never seen true P. oleracea in anything but yellow. The one that is pik there is mislabeled. Within the next couple of days I am going to go through and figure out how to correct it all.

If you are not a purslane fan, it's easy to make the mistake and name them incorrectly. We will help them! Hurray! Green Grin!

I wrote to the "powers that be" on the link Vicki gave me to figure out the easiest way to submit the proper species names. As I looked, there are more than a few that need correction. I want ATP to be correct just like Tiffany said. At least when it comes to Purslane and Portulaca. Green Grin!
