BTW, I think maybe the U.S.'s program may be working here. I hardly ever see any damage I can for certain associate with wild hogs these days. Armadillos, however...visit my yard often to dig!

What's the US program that's working?

We have a lot of wild hogs and we shoot and eat them. Wild hog sausage is the best sausage I make (and we make a lot of sausage from different meats.) If more people saw hogs as an asset rather than a liability we'd have less of a problem, I think.

We need entrepreneurs working with land owners to harvest hogs and process them into good food for sale to the public.

Our neighbor has a barbeque catering business and his son hires out to remove wild hogs from local farms and ranches. They have a winning combination!

The article mentioned a USDA program that started in April, but not much info about it. And, of course, Texas already had a pretty aggressive program to encourage killing of hogs. All I know is that here locally, the situation has improved this year. Porkpal, that sounds like a great idea!

I missed that. The article only lets you see the first paragraph if you're not subscribed, so I didn't get to read the whole thing.

Apparently, the San Antonio newspaper only started doing that "subscribers only" thing just recently! I hate that newspapers are doing that!

They are going to train returning veterans to shoot feral hogs from helicopters.

Good! I gather from the promotions of private helicopter hunting groups - free to the land owner, financed by the shooters - that aerial hunting is by far the most effective there just needs to be more of it.

That's true, the aerial hunting is the way to slow down the hogs. It's also a good way for veterans to use their "specialized" skills.

I know a helicopter pilot locally who kills hogs by chasing them with his chopper until the hogs literally die from exhaustion. I have mixed feelings on the matter. That's a tremendous amount of good pork going to waste but then again he's protecting land and other resources.

Seems like a waste of aviation fuel. He needs to hire a few veterans! Hogs do damage to residential yards too. They can root up a yard overnight. Shrubs, grass, and anything else they can eat is fair game.

The professional organizers of helicopter hunts that I know use the helicopter to chase the hogs out into the open where the shooters can safely kill them. The "pork" is left where it falls unless the land owner wants it or asks it to be removed.

Well, all I know is that I haven't seen or heard any signs of them for a while! I actually feel fairly safe going out to our shed at night these days. The shed is outside the fence.
