Standing Corn
At least two states have experimented with leaving a number of rows of corn standing in fields
adjacent to the highway right-of-way. Experience has shown that this strategy is economically
viable. The number standing corn rows varies with the size of the harvester and the harvesting
pattern used by the farmer, but to be effective, the minimum is six to
eight rows. The most effective strategy is to use two strips of corn rows separated by 150 to
200 ft. (45 to 60 m). The minimum setback from the road shoulder should be 35 times the
height of the standing corn. Figure 18 illustrates the effectiveness of such fences.
Owners receive payment for the corn left standing in the field based on the market value for the
crop on the day of harvest. Some corn left standing can be salvaged in the spring. Costs for
such a program in 1984 in one state averaged $1,300/mile ($810/km).

That's pretty interesting information, but are you asking a question here?

My question was posted earlier, I had hoped for information if anyone has done this...but I could not find my question to add to it, as I suppose it has to be moderated. We are grain farmers, and I collected corn from the field left behind from the combine, and hope to have ornamental corn in my front and side yards. Corn is our living so I feel it's appropriate and beautiful, after all, people shock it up for Halloween decor, why not for usefulness, too?

That is par for the course...I have very bad country Internet...it's so slow many things give up on posting...I do not know the categories yet but it's not farming.but i see, other, ok...it's anyone in the country with snow drifting problems.

You mention the costs for implementing the program, are there any savings from reduced labor in road clearing?

I thought about this the whole time I was mowing lawn today (something new, I got a self propelled mower like I ran in grade school, same lawn!)....I am so excited. I think I'll plant corn where I can in the first 140 feet then after harvest put snow fence that we have from years ago...(plastic kind) in the 2nd 140 feet....I spent mucho dinero last year for plowing, as I do not have a cab and just cannot handle it all myself, average cost per plow was $40 to $60. And I LOVE THE LOOK OF CORN, BEING the daughter of a "Corn King." Smile.
I have all kinds of ideas like....metal stakes where I couldn't grow the corn, holding up "shock-like" stems... and spray painting it red and green, chuckle with Christmas lights....yes, I do get carried away....with ideas...

We will definitely need pictures of that!
