I do this in my head while driving. I try to name plants in the medians, peoples' yards, the surrounding areas. Any name goes as long as I know it's correct. It's a fast game or slow game depending on how fast I am driving. It's a good brain twister! Sometimes, I amaze myself at how many different plants I can ID. Other times, I am tongue tied and get stumped. Like those Old Fashion Roses...Vintage Roses...I never came up with the name before I passed it! And that's the rule, you gotta name it before you pass it. A lot of times I see things I don't recognize. A lot of times I need to keep my eyes on the road!

You say this as if people do other things while driving? I moved to AL from OH 7 years ago and I'm starting to come around from feeling like a noob here, but still a long way to go to know most of the roadside and landscape plants like I did in OH, like starting phase 2! I don't know the names of any roses, just what colors I like, and that they must smell great, you would win that 'round for sure. Fun!

A couple of decades ago I worked for an agronomic seed company. One year I was put in charge of 5000 acres of seed corn under irrigation near the Illinois River, about 80 miles from home. I drove up to there on a daily basis. To occupy the time driving I started to identify roadside plants, I got to a hundred before that season was over. That learning experience I credit to my interest in plants ever since.
Nothing that's been done can ever be changed.

Yikes, Cheryl. I can barely manage to do that when we go out for a walk without tripping or wandering into the ditch!

But of course we're looking at birds and butterflies and other stuff as well.

Another good place to ID plants for fun is on golf courses - it drives my DH crazy . . . I keep telling him golf just doesn't have enough excitement for me, and I'm only out there for the walk. But it puts him a little off his game so I can even beat him sometimes. Angel
(it's just a little short executive course and we play 9 holes once a week or so)

I tend to try to figure out what plants are when I go for walks. Back when I still had more than 3 active brain cells, I could remember a lot of plants and flowers I saw on my walks around Denver. But these days, I'd forget the names of the plants in my own yard if the labels were missing. I am happy to see people out in their gardens so I can ask about their plants. But around here, I wait until late in the evening to go for walks and most people have called it a day by then.

Itty Bitty and I walked a new route last evening. Saw a tree with beautiful scented pink flowers. Then discovered that area has a lot of the same tree. Since it didn't bother my allergies, and attracted bees, I imagine Itty Bitty and I will walk that way often. Eventually, someone is bound to be in their yard for me to ask about them. I find it much more fun to ask the neighbors than take pictures and research - because I'm lazy. And I'm not sure I'd walk around with my camera in that area. We also didn't sit on any curbs to rest because it didn't feel safe. My cell phone is too cheap for decent pictures.

I totally get the brain cell thing as I see my own are diminishing rather quickly. I have a box of garden tags and an awesome computer label maker screaming for my attention. I need to get those markers out before I forget all my plants in my own yard! The road game keeps me sharp albeit a little dangerous on the road. Hilarious! Hilarious! But the priority here is not to ever forget my plants! I want the names etched into my brain so that whenever Alzheimer's hits or a stroke, plant names are the ones I want to remember. After my kids and husband, of course! Rolling on the floor laughing I want to become that Crazy Old Lady Who Talks Incessantly About Plants.
