I an new to ATP and I am very happy that I found it. Already I can tell that its makeup is of people who appreciate all things plants.

With this message I am uploading a couple of images of a clay container that I have on my covered front porch in central Florida, Zone 9b.

I have not yet been able to identify the ferns. There is a large patch of them in the woods/forest here. They grow 6 to 7 feet tall until they began to tilt or lean over by their own weight and finally end up lying on the forest floor.

I planted these in the clay container when they were only a few inches tall and they have done well in the container on my covered front porch. I rarely water them and they do fine with very little direct sunshine.

Can someone name these ferns?

Love your container, and the dark green leaves of your fern. Wonderful combination of colors. Looking forward to your fern having a name.

@rattlebox might be able to help identify your fern. I'm am not familiar with the ferns in your area.

Looks like Leather Fern Acrostichum danaeifolium to me.



It's a huge fern that can easily get to 5-10' tall in moist, nutrient-rich environments. Your fern is definitely not Cinnamon Fern, another really large fern. I'm not familiar enough to know if there might be other contenders.

There are others, of course, depending on your interests. You should check out the forums list. But these two in particular I recommend.

The Florida Gardening forum are mostly people that live and garden in Florida. We know that Florida gardening is different than that of any other state., with our subtropical climate and our rainy/dry seasons. Some great people with a lot of Florida-specific (as well as other) knowledge there.

The Plant ID forum is a great place to go when you need to ID a particular plant. Again, a lot of very knowledgeable people are regulars there, and they seem to thrive on trying to be first with the right answer.

As you familiarize yourself with ATP, more and more you'll realize what a great resource this site is!
