My goal is flower power and curb appeal. I am thinking of a floribunda or small shrub, but welcome all suggestions. I have had the most success with own root roses. This flower bed has sun (for the roses) mixed sun and shade provided by a couple of trees. I am featuring contrasting leaf colors and textures with bright orange and dark purple to black plants as accents. I live in a wooded area. Not many neighbors garden. Splashes of bright orange will be a welcome surprise along the woody lane.

People may remember that I had a "tiger garden" of hostas, tiger lilies and other juglone resistant plants in my old place. Those who know me may be surprised by this request. I love soft, warm pastel roses planted in cottage settings. I am planting my beloved surviving roses, bulbs and perennials in my back yard.

The brightest orange rose in my garden is Kordes' Brillant, but it's rather difficult to find, and it doesn't bloom that often.

Rose (Rosa 'Kordes' Brillant')

For a vivid orange on a rose bush that's almost always covered in blooms, try Marmalade Skies:

Rose (Rosa 'Marmalade Skies')

For a lighter orange, the same color as orange juice, try Vavoom:

Rose (Rosa 'Vavoom')

Summer Sun is available from Edmunds until 7 am June 10, 2014. After that you wait until next year. Palatine carries it most years, I think. It't a Kordes rose.
It is pretty bright, not as clear and bright as Vavoom, but it's easy to grow and it's a reliable bloomer.
Fired Up might be a good one. It's new, and I haven't grown it, but I've seen it in nurseries and it is eye catching.
I think it's in most nurseries this year.

My favorite orange is Easy Does It. It's the best rose out there, in my opinion. It's not bright, though. It is beautiful and healthy and always full of blooms.

Thanks for the suggestions. Vavoom is such an unusual clear color. I think it would work well. Fired Up is fun with the stripes. It is a challenge going plant shopping on the bus, but I'll have to check the local places.

The softer coral oranges like Easy Does It would be better suited to my main rose garden. I had a small, own root Easy Does It , but it didn't make it thru its second winter. It was an unusually tiny band from Chamblees.

I missed Edmunds, but that is alright. I ordered from them once. At least they offer returns, because the roses were doa.

New Year is also a great orange. Picante if you can find it. I second Vavoom.. it's got a good orange-juice color. Here's some of my oranges

Charisma

Chris Evert

WildFire

GingerSnap

Orange Velvet

Picante

Sundowner

Mardi Gras
Rose (Rosa 'Mardi Gras')

Oranges & Lemons

Tequila Sunrise

Vavoom

Adobe Sunrise

New Year

I'm sure I have others that I can't remember.. orange being my second favorite rose color. Like Playboy, Portlandia, and others that look orange mostly, but aren't classified as "orange" or are orange blends.

Those are all great ones - especially New Year, Orange Velvet and Gingersnap!

A striped rose like Oranges and Lemons or Fired Up would be fun for a tiger garden.

I hope that I can find something locally. I am looking forward to some color! I have lots of tiger lilies in that flowerbed and some orange and black annual/perennial seeds.

How do your oranges survive the Colorado winter?

Marmalade Skies is my favorite because it is covered with blooms from April to November for me and the blooms don't wash out in our wonderful vibrant sun.

Joyce - In Alamo (yes, I know that area very well!), roses would bloom almost year round. In the Poconos of Pennsylvania, not so much.

But we appreciate the blooms more because we have to wait so long to see them! If it is a good year, I could see blooms from May until October.

I will look into marmalade skies. I have two mostly sunny spaces for roses in the front bed. I have until spring to decide what to plant there!

Andi - Must be nice.. didn't get any blooms until like June this year. Winter would just NOT let go!

Forgot to mention these guys here:

South Africa (almost more apricoty than a true deep orange - Palatine)
Rose (Rosa 'South Africa')

Doris Tysterman (hard to find - got mine from a seller in England)

Bing Crosby (honestly is more orange than here.. this shows more red - pretty easy to find)

Summer Holiday (hard to find - got mine from a seller in England)

Westerland (nurseries should have it.. it's good for colder zones)
Rose (Rosa 'Westerland')

Easy Does It (ubereasy to find)
Rose (Rosa 'Easy Does It')

Halle (Palatine.. not too impressed with this one)
Rose (Rosa 'Halle')

Summer Song (Palatine) not a true "orange", more salmony, but still breathtaking.
Rose (Rosa 'Summer Song')

Kordes Brillant always blooms more red than orange for me.
Rose (Rosa 'Kordes' Brillant')

RedGold is an old rose, and this always blooms true for me

I am grateful for any sign of life this year. I'm trying to get everything in the ground and ready for winter. They can grow roots and canes this year. I'll wait for blooms.

Now I have to get the "new" computer working. It should be much faster once I figure out which memory stick is faulty. Serves me right for not running memtest first thing. The joy of Frankenstein computers. I want to get the computer part clutter out of my way!

Andi - Here's a picture of my Solar Flash. It's not very orange, more of a hot red, but still quite the bright flower.

Vavoom has to be the orangest rose I've ever seen. Regardless of the season (here, anyway) it's consistent in it's intensity.

I didn't realize that there were so many orange roses!

I didn't think of Austin's Summer Song fro the front bed, but it could be a good choice. Austin roses do well for me.

Brighter ones like Vavoom, Oranges and Lemons, Marmalade Skies or Summer Sun would be unusual also. Unfortunately, the only roses in the stores around here are the knockouts....yawn...

Andi - If you'd like, I'd be happy to keep my eyeballs open for a rose or two or 3.. and if I spot one that I feel is a good one, can send it to ya. I've shipped roses before.. only problem is that it's getting hot and I don't want to try & get you something that will croak in transit. But I can definitely keep eyeballs open.

Thanks, Toni, but I should probably wait until spring. The poor rose would suffer in transit. Besides, I haven't had luck with fall plantings. If I saw a good candidate locally, especially on sale, I would give it a try. Otherwise, I will make up my wishlist and shop in spring.

I picked up Marmalade Skies this year. I wanted to say it looked way more coral pink here. (Which is why it stood out to me.) I was shocked when I got home and looked it up to see if my impulse buy had a good rep and saw it listed as orange. I found this: http://www.rosefile.com/RosePa... "Comments: In the bright California sun the flower is really really orange, sometimes vermilion. In the northeast it's a softer shade of salmon or perhaps coral. The flowers are borne in ample numbers on a low, sprawling, healthy plant. It does sometimes cling to flowers longer than it should, and the petals bleach to an unsightly pink or white. The plant is quite vigorous and free of disease even in places where rose culture can be a little difficult - like Missouri."
After having it here in the pot and seeing the way the blooms fade, I actually almost returned it. I am still undecided on it!
So maybe skip that one if you want real orange.
Here's some pictures of it

It's a good rose. It should produce plenty of blooms for you in every shade of orange!
Hurray!

Thanks for the input. ,Marmalade skies looks like it is a similar color to Austin's Christopher Marlowe. It is one of those hard to describe pink-orange-coral colors. I like those colors in the garden. I have Radler's Carefree Celebration and some peach roses.

Sometimes, I put the potted rose in place and see how I like the color before putting it in the ground.

Heading back out with the fussy dog. Want to get a bit more done before it gets dark. He wants to walk around the lake again since it is finally a nice day again.
