Out roaming the gardens and yard and discover this. Did some research and I think this is what they call Azalea Galls. It's a fungus that grows on new growth. Can be many colors and when it has white spots it can spread the fungus (white spots means spores can spread). I removed about a 32 ounce cups worth and tossed them in the garbage. Anybody ever see this before? I only have them on a few azaleas in my front yard. I read it's caused by moist rainy conditions and can effect the blooms next year. Suggestions to rid it are to remove the mulch and toss away and replenish with fresh clean mulch. Ugh it's always something..... The only mulch I have under these azaleas is leaf mulch from last year. Just raked all the leaves out from under the azaleas and tossed it into the garbage.

I've had some white wet stuff that was black on the stems on several azalea's in the past - I rub it off and spray some insecticide to kill them off - I know you are green about that - too much sweat and time to risk a plant to some carnivorous insect out to kill.

Disgusting looking stuff! Galls are produced by insects...if you open one up, you should see the insect causing the problem.....

Marilyn I did open up a few of the larger galls but didn't see any insects in them. When I got home from work today I found a few more and plucked them off straight to the garbage. I have a grouping of 7 azaleas and only the two smaller plants seem to have the galls. Gonna trim both the effected bushes and move them to a new location this weekend. Hoping the better air circulation around the plants helps them. I've removed and tossed all the mulch under them as well. Gonna just put straw down once they are transplanted.
