We a brief shower on the 12th, that put about a foot of water in the rain garden I'm working on. Yesterday the was a large Bullfrog in it, and this morning I saw the two Gulf Coast Toads. This afternoon their were already a lot of newly hatched tadpole.

Notice the strings of eggs already laid in front of them.

No kidding! I guess, I better start constructing some shelter to keep them around.

These pictures cover a few square feet at one end of the rain garden. The water area right now is about 1 to 2 feet wide and about 12 feet long and it looks this way across the entire area. There are thousands of tadpoles.

Oh my goodness! I haven't seen that many tadpoles in one "puddle" since I was a kid. You're going to have a bumper crop for sure. Even if survival rate is not great; you'll still have oodles!

I have Red-backed Broodfrogs calling Pseudophryne raveni. I named it after a friend many years ago. It is a winter breeder. The male sits with the eggs where they have been laid on land. When an area floods, they tadpoles immediately break out of the eggs. I cannot find my photos - they must have hatched.

Hello to all from central Massachusetts where I live with my husband, two dogs and two cats on 11 acres out in the country right next to a large swamp. We get all sorts of amphibians and reptiles on our property. I found this fellow a week or so ago hanging out on a daylily leaf. This is a young gray treefrog. Adult gray treefrogs are gray or grayish green and patterned like lichen. The young treefrogs are solid green on the back. If you look at the legs you can see a preview of the color and pattern they will have as an adult.
Have a nice evening, Karin

I'd like some toads. Going to have to read up on how to attract them to the yard. And if we even HAVE any during drought periods. Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!

I found a new critter in my garden while I was cleaning and raking around one of the raised beds. As I pulled away some leaves and old mulch I spotted what looked like a small balloon or ball. Shrug! What's this? So I picked it up and washed the soil off and it was a...
I have no clue. So I showed it to my daughter who quickly used Google Images to make the identification.

It's a Hyla gratiosa aka Barking Treefrog. He was beautiful but since I had disturbed his sleep I put him back under cover and did not take a photo. He looks unlike all the other treefrogs in the yard. He's a beauty; pretty spots on his back and a good personality for someone who was awakened so rudely.

This link has photos and you can click to hear the sound he makes.

Somehow I am Crying afraid that this cute Barking Treefrog plans to get even with me for disturbing his sleep. I foresee many sleepless nights in my future. We have laws to protect us from barking dogs, but barking frogs? No law against it. Rolling on the floor laughing
