As I have mentioned before, I live in Humboldt County (Next to Eureka, Ca) and we have several native lilies growing wild. Today I took a trip (approx. 10 miles) from my home to find L. kelloggii. I found several patches flowering.

They are on private land - Lumber company land. Some are lighter and some are darker. Next to the road

Very cool. They look great in nature with neighboring ferns. The perfect combo! Thanks for sharing Smiling

Nice ~ and thank you for sharing. If we had lilies growing here naturally, I'd probably accidentally fall down with a spade in my hand. Whistling
Where are we going, and why am I in this hand-basket?

Simply exquisite, Mike. Any pics of the whole plant? (He says greedily.)

I trust you didn't encounter any growers of the illegal sort....

Sorry didn't take any photos showing the whole plant. Best I can do is this. It does show a set of leaves.

No worries. Often I mean to take a pic of something, and I keep thinking I will come to a good spot or view, and then it never happens! I would imagine a pic of the whole plant wouldn't look that great, and a person such as myself would be the only one thankful to see it. Blinking

Here in Minnesota, L. michiganense is fairly common. That is to say, I know of several places, particularly along railroad right-of-ways, where patches of michiganense can still be found. Quite a few years ago, I rescued a couple of bulbs just ahead of the bulldozer. Initially, they thrived and I ended up with two impressive clumps in different parts of my yard. I have never seen stems this tall in the wild.

Above photo taken in 2002, don't know if it will reproduce very well here. Unfortunately both clumps soon after this glorious success began diminishing and I lost both of them. I have no idea why, but it is still my biggest disappointment in gardening.
I also purchased a couple of bulbs, which did not do well at all. One of them still comes up though, and I see maybe one bloom every 2 or 3 years.

L. michiganense. Behind the scenes , Rick and I have been watching and discussing what we believe to be a very concentrated group of very young L. michiganense. There are about 50 or 60 of what appear to be equal in size to 2 year old seedlings coming up in an irregular but tight circle about 4 feet or 1.2 meters in diameter. Whether this colony came to be from seed or was formed by stolons of a couple mature plants is not known. I only spotted one young adult plant close to the group, but there are usually 5 or 6 mature plants in the general area of about 50 feet. Neither of us has ever seen such a large, tight group as this, ever! It is about 30 feet from my driveway. The first picture was taken May 9th. The last picture is from July, 2014. The rest were taken today.

Fantastic! I hate to think how far away my closest clump of native lilies might be... it would be a long cold swim!

UPDATE June 5th, 2016.

I can now safely estimate there are more than 100 in this group, ranging in size from single leaf on up to 9 of them at 14 to16 inches and 1 of them at 24 inches at this point. Notice the other herbaceous growth now appearing. It seems these 'weeds' play an important role with L michiganense in that they, number1, provide camouflage to the plant to avoid being eaten by rabbits and deer, and number 2, they provide necessary support to what typically is a slender stem (see last picture). Pretty unique evolution.
