I have seen it in trades swaps and sales and looked it up but the description is vague .

Thank you

A liner is a plant that comes in a pot 1" x 1".
A hosta liner is a tissue culture, a clone, that is less than one year old. These take great care and take much longer to mature. The first winter, they may not freeze. I put mine, sometimes just under 1,000 of them, in a cold greenhouse where the temperature will not drop under 40°.

Oh, I thought they needed a cold spell. 40 days of below 40? I bought some liners when I first started and they went straight into the ground, we do get down to 20° a few times usually but last year we got down to 7°! My hostas are much larger now and they loved it. Here is a pic of some liners I got from Yahoo Groups a few years ago. They are tissue culture.

They do go dormant at 40° and they stay dormant until the temperature hit over 50°.

I would say that you were lucky that winter, Susan.

I've purchased a LOT of liners from the same coop, for several years. I potted them up the first year and planted them (pot and all) in the ground. Mine did very well, but you do have to be patient. I really like the cost of these plants and they're not really hard to raise from that size.
Here's a few of the liners that I've grown...

I have been buying TC from QandZ and Shady Oaks since 1999, and there were some years that many died before I learned that they m ay not freeze that first year.

Now I have a routine, and my hostas live and grow well. Most years I buy just under 1,000 liners, and this years was no exception.

I have also been buying TC heucheras, and soon I will be selling them also.

Rose, did you buy TC hostas this year?

@Rose1656 Can you give an average cost you have paid for them that size?

Here are mine. I put all them into a raised nursery bed and they stayed outside the whole time, they only problem I have is when they do not get a good cold spell they die. I search for hostas that are 'Low Chill' so they will make due with a shorter cold spell.

Susan, they look great! I am getting ready to make a new Hosta bed. Need to decide what I want to plant.

Thanks for the info here especially that Hostas go dormant below 50ºF
That helps me understand Hosta growing as they always come up so late.
Now I will mark them and wait for them to show.

I have paid as low as $2.49 for them. The newer varieties are more expensive, but Sum and Substance, June and other oldies but goodies are very affordable. The co-op is lacking interest this year so I haven't been able to get any bargains. But, I did get many varieties over the years to add to my collection. And, my collection is well over 700 varieties! I would not have been able to build this collection of I'd paid retail prices for them all!

Cat, I got a lot of one year plants from Countryboys Garden, they were the same price as liners at the time so I got 60 and only actually got 8 liners from yahoo groups, they shipped my coneflowers at the end of October and they all died. So no more co-ops for me, unless I get to choose ship time.

@Rose1656
Me too, I love the old reliable's and sometimes add a second or third one, like June.

I have paid as low as $.99 per liner, but most are over $2.
I have many that I have paid a lot more, and those I do not sell because most people want cheap hostas.
I paid $25 for Royal Mouse Ears and Sparkle. I sell them for $50. I sold a very mature RME to a ATP member for $30, and she thought it sound be a clump.

I am guilty of buying cheap hostas. Some do not like the heat.
I also want to stress the importance of reputable dealers because of HVX.
I never buy hosta from big box stores.

I think the most expensive liner I've bought was Sir Richard. I paid $17.00 for it and it's doing great. Most were usually less than $5.00.

I found a picture of Sir Richard...really like this one! I need to take a picture of this one for my records. This one is from 2 years ago.

Good info on the Hosta Liners. Thank you Rose and Susan for sharing the info. I now know why my liners died years ago when I went in on a co-op.

OT.....I have had such bad luck with Heucheras that I will not pay retail more than 5.00 for them. They are too iffy in my gardens. I have about 20 that have survived a few years but I have killed 50+.
