This plant is in ite 3rd year.
What can I do to it?
Cut it off and keep the pups?
I really cant repot. Its too cumbersome.

PLUS I think there is a kritter mineing in the pot. There is a ring of stone-sand around the bottomof the pot,as tho something is taking out the sand and depositing it on the deck. I never see activity duering the day but morning brings a new layer of potting mix.

JoAnn, have you considered having somebody else do it for you? I try to pot up plants for other people when I can. Too bad you are so far away, but there must be someone who can do it if you provide the necessary material...
PS Lil critter can be ID'ed if plant is pulled out for repotting... Whistling

Soooo do you recommend re potting? or leaving the new growth til winter and taking off the top. I keep the plant inside duering our winters.

I would repot now if you want to keep growing that already handsome specimen going but if you have the inclination to propagate, wait till spring at least, then you can take the heads off (that would be two new plants after callousing and rooting the stems) and expect that the old stems would branch with new heads. You would end up with 3, 4 plants in multiple pots?

Repotting is it then. I can see where this is going. There were two pups on the plant last fall when I brought it inside. I cut them off and potted them. They slept thru the winter then started to gro this spring. Gave one to my sister-in-law.
Thanks for the help.
Now to see whats mining in the pot.

Jo Anne I loved your plant so much I looked for it all last year until I found it. I had one but killed it years ago. I followed your instructions and it survived the winter. I cannot wait until mine gets as big as your plant. Thank you.

This is the one I had 8 yrs ago that lasted that summer and I killed it that winter and I never tried it again until I saw your plant.

Cinta : Mine is growing too tall for the pot and my environment. I hope to collect a couple of babies and start over. It sure is a handsome plant when smaller.

Transplanted the Paddle Plant
When I took it out of the planter there seemed to be an ant farm tunneling going on but no insects. At lweast there isnt any creature like a toad in there.
I knocked off ALL the soil from the root ball

Thumb of 2014-06-26/ge1836/1aca07

Repotted with new soil, cutting off the tallest stem.

This plant doesnt owe me anything so I will not be sorry if either plant doesnt make it.
Multiplying plants is a hardship here as they all need inside winters, that means I carry in and tend them all winter.NO .

Stuck the cutting into a new pot .

It is such pretty plant. I wonder if you could cut the bare stem and root it. I could see you not wanting the bare stem. That would make it shorter and give you a bushy look. Is that what you mean by to tall?

I didnt want to be too drastic so I cut one of the two stems and the last image shows it in a seperate pot.
I dont mind the paddle plant in the SouthWest where it grows to six feet. I doubt it could ever reach that but the best stage of the plant was last year before the stem began to show and lower leaves dropped off.

It is a very prolific plant during warm weather..it can grow leaves up and down the stem or make new pups just at the base.

Got badly damaged last winter, always happens since I leave it outside.
Photo early March 2014, eventually top part got separated on its own, neck rotted but upper part still alive, so I just stuck it back in the soil and kept the lower part with little paddles already growing as is: please excuse the noid echeveria growing alongside..I just always leave it there too for company Smiling

Well I learned something from that video (how to pronounce kalanchoe Hilarious! ).

Seriously now, it was quite informative... I wouldn't have thought that you need to let those cuttings callous for several months. I assume you risk rot if you try planting them too soon. I might try growing this since I see them occasionally for sale around here.

I didnt bother to callous the pups I cut last fall. They wintered over in my livingroom window. I did notice they grew quite slow.
I gave one to Sister in law for their new home in Arizona.
Yes Kalanchoe who knew.

I You tube many plant questions and find great answers.
