I purchased some seeds online. I managed to get a few to germinate on my window sill. Unfortunately, my dear cat knocked them off all over the floor, so my labels got mixed up.

What I have is the pod parent for them is Rubirosa. But the pollen parent is what got mixed up. Both crosses had Rubirosa x ??? The mixed up parentage for pollen parent could be Goldflame or Lizzy.

One of the plants just bloomed for the first time. I got a weird bloom color. Not pink or yellow. More like a very pale peach color. This is the actual color of the blooms which have been open for 2 days now and are starting to wilt. So the color is what it is. Is there anyway to tell which pollen parent could have created this seedling brugmansia? It seems odd that the color turned out like this. Is that possible given the possible parent names or could the seeds have been mislabeled when I bought them?

I think she is sticking! I would keep you Pale Peach Passion!! I am in the same boat with the seed germination. I told my cats that if one seed got knocked over they would be fuzzy slipper ( that worked for a while LOL), Just remember that most plants are hybirds and while one of your blooms or pollen parent may be bright pink still one of them may have had alight parents.

Brugs don't breed true from seed. Seeds from the same pod will/may produce whites, pinks, yellows, ect, so there is no way of telling which is which. Since you don't know which is which, all the seedling in that mix are now NOIDS, which is short for No I D (identification), but, not to worry, "a rose, by any other name would still smell as sweet"

Rhapsody - She is a keeper! I do like the blooms a lot. She has a nice thick trunk with 3 branches coming off it at the top. I grow mine as standards (tree form), so I am very happy with her growth. Unfortunately, I do have to grow my brugs in containers because of the root knot nematodes in the ground soil here in FL. This is summer also, and the heat is hard on my brugs. She does get some shade during the day, but also several hours of direct sun. I may have to move her (luckily she can be moved being in a container).

Dan - I know that there are so many variables with crosses of brugmansias. I was just looking for some similar trait to determine the pollen parent in this particular situation. Maybe even something as simple as shape and the length and curvature of the points.

Looking at all 3 brugs, I am thinking the parents of this particular seedling might be Rubirosa x Lizzy. The reason I say this is because of the tight cluster of petals on the blooms of Lizzy. I understand about the color coming from somewhere in the past genetics. Or maybe I am totally wrong .... Shouldn't there be some similarity to the parents via the blooms?

I grow 99% of my army in pots. I don't think I have enough land to put them in the ground. Have never heard about root knot nematodes until now. Going to look them up now,

Rhapsody - The Root Knot Nematodes (RKN) are mostly found in FL soil. They attack the root system of plants that don't have a resistance to them. Nasty little things! All my brugs are now in containers once again. They do just fine there, too.

What size container do you use? I use the 18 gallon plastic storage bins. I drill holes in the sides of the bins on the lower edge near the bottom and they are ready to go after adding potting mix!

Mine are in 5 gallon buckets with holes drilled in the bottom. Pots were over 10 dollars while buckets were 2.60 from Lowes. So out comes the Black and Decker. Any excuse to bring out a power tool!

Rhapsody - I hear ya about going cheap! The plastic 18 gallon bins I use cost me about $5 each. I had been using the 5 gallon buckets, but my brug trees were becoming root bound, so I switched to 18 gallon bins instead. I have one tree in a bin that is probably about 9 - 10' tall. I was shocked! Mine never got that tall until I grew them in the bins.
