I started to form a list of new peonies to purchase this Fall. Does anyone have a favorite that I should consider?

Consider a double red fern leaf if you do not have one. They can be a part of a small rock garden or any raised bed arrangement. P.tenuifolia Rubra Flore Plena is they they are cataloged sometimes.

What types of peonies do you favor? Tree? Itoh? Herbaceous? Do you like singles, Japanese form, bomb, half double or full double? Are you partial to any specific colors?

Personally, I am currently thrilled with The Mackinac Grand (deep red) and Lois's Choice (pinkish that fades to ??). I'm also impressed with Zuzu and Miss America for whites, for a single white I like Silver Shell and Krinkled White. Those are just a few.. Most of all, have fun!

I think Mackinac Grand is indeed a must have. Right now mine looks like a vase full of deep red roses partially open. And the bush is 45" tall. I have Miss America also and it is really simple and lovely opening pinkish but slowly fading the a pink base and a very slightly ivory ends. I do favor Japanese form and singles.

I really like the Itoh's. I like all the types. I only have 4 tree peonies, so I am just getting started. Pure white peonies are boring.

please note that peony 'do tell' is not pure white:)

Some of my favorites are the singles and Japanese peonies. The Anemone type peonies are ok, but not as good as....

Actually, I can not tell the difference between a Japanese & Anemone type peony....I might not be alone.

I went to the Nichols Arboretum Peony display this year. I have never seen so many white peonies. I felt cleansed. Also, I got a parking ticket :)

life is good!

Itoh peonies... I only have 2 mature plants, so they are my favorites. Garden Treasure & Bartzella.

Waiting on first arrival, SCARLET HEAVEN, OLD ROSE DANDY, BORDER CHARM, PASTEL SPLENDOR, PRAIRIE CHARM.

The ones in caps were planted last Fall. A couple of them bloomed this year.

First Arrival was really a good size this year, but no buds. It's a 2 or 3 year old tissue culture plant.

Itoh Yumi is a wonderful plant, with husky, luscious blooms. It's my favorite of all of the yellow Itohs.

Fina Gardens is wonderful, they send amazingly large tubers, and most of mine planted in the fall bloomed this spring. I've already placed my order for this year, for fall delivery. They've already sold out of some plants.

Fina tubers on the right, compared to another vendor.

The Mackinac Grand and Lois's Choice really do look great.

However, many vendors are already sold out.

Songsparrow has The Mackinac Grand in stock, but it is listed at $140

Maybe I will just wait on these two...

I ordered Mackinac Grand from Adelmans for $28 dollars several weeks ago. I can't believe there is such a huge variation in price fom one vendor to another, $140 Grumbling Crying

I planted Lois's Choice in December 2012, that I got in a sale from Brooks Gardens. It finally bloomed this spring. It really does have a beautiful bloom.

$140!!!!!! I have never seen it for over 40$.
Sheesh
This year, I was impressed with Horizon, but you already have it :)
Coral Sunset is beautiful, too, with its fading colour and upright posture.
Half of my peonies didn't bloom - too young. Out of my tree peonies... I loved them all. High Noon's colour was outstanding. Koukamon was stunning, but mine came out magenta instead of maroon.

Wow, I didn't realize the spread on prices was that great either. I know that Reath's is spendy on some but then his are the largest tubers (sometimes the entire clump) I have ever seen. I believe Garden treasure is spendy. I can hardly wait til the few tree peonies I ordered last year and this begin to bloom. I loved the ones I had (two Japanese and one Chinese) but they took three years to bloom. Reath's gives you a choice in size (years in the ground and number of eyes) for many of his plants. If I can afford it I try to get the larger ones and he almost always sends extras That is how I got Pink Hawaiin Coral and ummm, can't remember. Oh Red Charm several years ago. The average price brings down the price on the spendy ones to more reasonable.

Holy cow. You really jump right in. I don't think I have ever ordered more than 4-5, and that from more than one supplier. I guess you have lots of ground to plant in. Wish I did. They should be absolutely gorgeous.

Glad to see you got Joker Frank, that one is supposed to be very unique and the GW price after the 10% off is amazing. I bought one from somewhere else last year for $40 after comparing prices and getting the best deal, grabbed a 2nd from GW yesterday since the price was so good! I also got Red Charm; I saw it at the UofM peony garden and it was amazing. The pictures of it online never appealed to me but it was gorgeous in person! Wish I had something like that near where I live. The peonies were beautiful but I would love to explore the rest of the property, didn't have time on our visit. And the residential area it is in is absolutely beautiful, too. Can't imagine how much that property must be worth!
