We came from here
The thread "Our Orchid blooms in June 2014" in Orchids forum

It is July 1. and with that it is time for a new thread! Smiling Hopefully you will all join in and have a good time!
Let me start with a couple of things blooming now -
This small Cattleya aclandiae had two buds, but only one made it. This plant had a hard time surviving last Summer, but seems to have stabilized now.
Thumb of 2014-07-01/Ursula/1b9f45

Bl Tiny Kiss, a small Brassavola nodosa hybrid which came some years ago from Suwada.

Octomeria grandiflora blooms nicely several times a year, the leaves always spot on this plant, I wish I could grow it out clean, but…

Laelia lundii x Epi longipetalum blooms here and there

Thank you, Ursula, good start. The Laelia lundii cross gets my attention right away, very pretty. I think Tiny Kiss would fit in nicely with my Brassavola collection. I wonder how many children B. nodosa has fostered? Do you think the Octomeria leaves have a problem with the fertilizer you are using? And of course, love the Phrag. I sure wish I could grow them.

Thanks, Jim!
Regarding the spotted leaves on the Octomeria - perhaps this one didn't like the Fish tank water this indoor season. I cleaned the two tanks twice a week and poured the "used" water over the Orchids. Could be!

OK, tell me why diluted fertilizer application would cause spotting.

Chemical reaction with the flowers or leaves or calcium/lime deposits.

Some alien substance from the fish poop? Vitamins, or as Jim suggests too much calcium.

Have you tested your aquarium water's pH, Ursula? My well water has a pH of 8.2 and if I use it too much for watering the orchids I do see more spots and such as well as 'the usual' hard water deposits on the leaves.

Such spotting is usually worse on the flowers than the leaves but it can affect both.

Thanks, all good information. I will have to wait to Fall to check the pH of the Fish tank water. I will keep in mind to skip it on Orchids like that and see if that helps.

I have another cutie ( I think Smiling ) in bloom, Cirrhopetalum sikkimense. I was hoping the little umbels were timed to open together, but It doesn't look like it will happen, since a couple have dropped already.
This one is a miniature for sure!

Very cool, Ursula. I read somewhere recently where they had carved Cirrhopetalum off of Bulbophyllum and made it its own genus. I just love the flowers.

Ooh, such sweet little lanterns. They look very classy sitting in the coffee cup, too.

Better pictures of the Yellow Birds, getting yellow very quickly in the hot weather. When they bloom in winter it takes so much longer.

Ursula, I just ran your Cirrhopetalum through OrchidWiz and they are now calling it Bulb. roxburghii. Go figure. I think the folks making and selling name tags are behind this nonsense.

Nice pics of Yellow Bird, Elaine.

Bulbophyllum roxburghii! I agree, someone has a contract with the label manufacturer? Rolling my eyes. Thanks, Jim!!

Pretty Yellow Birds, Elaine.

I just looked for a small vase or cup to stabilize the mount so I could take some pictures. The plant grew pretty much around the wood, which I like.

I have another bloom! This is a first-time bloomer for me and I had no idea what it was going to look like. It's one of the seventeen I bought at Byrd's Orchids going-out-of-business sale. This is Lc. Mary Elizabeth Bohn x C. Seabreeze. I looked up the parents and it seems to favor the former parent more than the latter, but I see how both influenced its look.

In other exciting news, the orchid I posted last month is now fading but I discovered a new bud on it today. So that's cool and something you can look forward to.

Thanks everyone! Purple is my favorite color so I got really excited yesterday when one of the blooms opened just enough that I could see what color it was going to be. I'm just glad something is blooming in this heat because I'm wilting!

It's a beauty, Melanie. I love that color and I'm looking at anything with Mary Elizabeth or Seabreeze in the name now.

Here's an update on David Sander after a rain storm. At least the light was good with the cloud cover.

Thanks Elaine! When I was at Byrd's most of the plants were not in bloom. I was actually surprised by how many of the names I recognized (at least one of the names if it was a cross) so I was kind of guessing on a lot of them just based on their parentage. And not to get too political but when I saw a cattleya named 'Sarah Palin' I avoided it like the plague. Rolling on the floor laughing But I thought I'd seen something with the name "Seabreeze" before and had a good feeling about it and apparently it worked out.
