My orders are arriving almost daily, but I have to say that the rhizomes that
came today from Napa Iris Gardens just blew me away. They are so robust and bigger than any others I've received yet. The bonus iris, Boundless, looks good too.

I just read a comment by Chuck Chapman on another site as follows:

"New study released yesterday from U of Guelph confirming relationship of the systemics in neonicotinoid class (includes active ingredient in Bayers and most commercial systemics) with bee colony collapse. Currently regulations under review by Canada federal government. Ontario government has legislation posing new restrictions currently in parliament, made headlines in yesterdays newspaper."

Bonnie, that study is a confirmation of another one I read about last year. Very damaging stuff to use with devastating results. Remember DuPont's motto "Better living through chemistry" that should be changed to "Shorter living through chemistry since honeybees provide a majority of out pollination of food"?

Is there a list somewhere of all brands and chemicals that are killing the honeybees? Or is it just chemicals altogether? If homeowners stop using these chemicals will it make an impact on what is occurring to the bees or are crop growers using these chemicals also?

It's good that we are discussing the effects of chemicals on honeybees. Gardeners are some of the first to see the effects of commercial pesticides and herbicides on wildlife. We can find better ways.

Thanks to all for the kind comments on our work. Smiling :

eta: I haven't found a list per se, but there are many articles to be found on bees and pesticides/herbicides on Google.
We stopped using all pesticides and herbicides many years ago. People used to say that Roundup was safe. We didn't believe
that it was and we didn't use it. Now studies are questioning its safety. Our valley has been agricultural for centuries. Used to be apples and pears - now it's grapes for wine. Some of the vineyard owners have been receptive to a small but vocal group that have protested the use of the dangerous stuff. A typical procedure when land was prepared for vineyards was to cover it with black plastic (we're talking acres of land) and pump methyl bromide under the plastic. This killed everything for nearly a foot down. Earthworms and beneficial organisms included. That isn't done anymore, thanks to the vocal minority, which is edging toward the majority. I just hope it isn't too late. The earth needs defenders.
The good news is that we have bees everywhere on our land!

An article on the subject:

Henhouse- We've done the Capitola Arts Festival for years - maybe you saw our work there? (we've cut back on doing this and some other shows, since we're doing eldercare for my 98 yr. old mom.)

Most insecticide use, and consequent damage to the environment, comes from big farma. Then they want us to eat the stuff they grow.

Big PHARMA wants us to eat their poison so they can sell us more poisonous PHARMAceuticals. It is very short sighted. Dead people make poor consumers.

There are many insidious products. I have stopped buying any product with corn, soy, canola, sunflower and cottonseed; unless it is non-GMO or organically grown. Even dried beans and wheat are sprayed with RoundUp to dry them for threshing. Potato fields are sprayed with herbicides (phyto-pharmakeia, in Greek) to make the plants die back before the harvesting of the tubers.

Another key word in any ingredients list to avoid, is "fragrance". Fragrance ingredients are protected under Trade Secret laws and contain many hazardous chemicals that do not have to be disclosed. They are not government regulated and are linked to birth defects, cancers and hormone disruption.
Don't make fear based decisions.
