I recently purchased the "Rock Garden Blend" mixed Sedum seed from Swallowtail Gardens:

I mass-planted a portion of the seed into a good-sized pot and now have a large quantity of very small seedlings. A few are starting to show an indication of their character and there are clearly several different types.

I'm curious if anyone here has already done a grow-out on this seed mix and could give me an idea as to what to expect.

Hi Ron. I have grown sedum from seed. You don't want to let them dry out at seedling stage. At some point you will need to prick them out of the soil and carefully plant them into flats/pots.
Would love to see a photo of your seedlings.

Thanks Lynn.

There are quite a lot of seedlings, way more than I need, and way too crowded to do well without regular thinning. There are a few (with wider, flat leaves) that are growing faster. As you say, I'll need to prick them out (soon) to be on their own and to give the others more room. I'll try to get a pic today.

My problem (well, one of them Rolling my eyes. ) is they are growing really slow at this stage, and I'm terribly impatient. Knowing it's a mix, I want to see what every seedling will turn out to be!

I would just start by pricking out the larger ones that appear to have nice roots started. That will give the rest room to grow, and just repeat the process as they mature at different rates. Keep them well hydrated and in a somewhat shady area. The sun this time of year can do them in in just an hour or two if they dry out.
I just looked at your above links for the seed mix. Nice mix. Thumbs up
I am looking forward to seeing the photo. Hurray!

Lynn, I finally got a halfway decent photo. Not really clear, but seems about as good as I can get with my phone.

Maybe this weekend I can get something better, but here's a teaser for now:

Great photo Ron. There is definitely a mix of sedum growing in that photo. Can't wait to see them mature.

Chris, I'm looking forward too. But not sure I can wait; not sure I can take it.

I'm afraid that before these slow-growing children grow up enough to show what they'll turn out to be, my head may explode from the anticipation! Smiling Smiling Smiling

My problem is impatience. I have to check them every day, and on my days off, I may check them two or three times during the course of the day to be sure I haven't missed anything. It's worse than waiting for paint to dry. It's worse than watching for grass to grow. It's like watching mountains wearing away from erosion.

I can't stand it! nodding Hilarious! Rolling on the floor laughing

Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Noticed a couple dead med-sized seedlings yesterday. Didn't look like damp-off, but sprayed them down with chamomile tea anyway. I had already moved them under cover out of the daily rains we are having right now. Still in partial sunlight, just out of the rain. The soil mix drains well enough, but the container is a re-purposed hanging basket and therefore only has four small drain holes. With rains averaging 1½-2" per day, the soil was staying too wet.

Another reason for putting the container into protective custody is that something had gotten in and pulled up a couple of the larger seedlings. I think it was probably a bird as other seedlings (Adenium, Caesalpinia) were being damaged/pulled up in the same time frame.

Time to nick out the largest seedlings into their own containers. I'll post more pics as things develop.

And at time time in their growth you don't want to let them dry out.
