The scape/bud seems so small. Sorry little fuzzy.

Can you take a picture of the entire plant Hazeleyes? And any information you have about the plant would be helpful.

I don't remember if it was started from seed but for the life of me I can't remember.
Don't care what color was just trying to figure out what kind of iris it is.
Ok distracted the little garden helper and managed to get some pics

It almost looks like a blackberry lily from the tiny buds and the buds are not formed like a bearded. I grow blackberry lilies and that would be my guess. We may have to wait until the buds open Hazeleyes, but now I really want to know what that plant is. If it is a blackberry lily that is yellow I will be begging for seeds as mine are the orange ones.

I don't think you can pollinate with an iris Hazeleyes. it is in the iris family - iridaceae - but not an iris per se. Look up Belamcanda Chinensis. It is from China and Japan and is certainly not a lily. It likes partial shade here, likes a lot of water during the growing season and to be on the dry side during the winter. A lot of people here try to grow these like you would an iris and they can not take the dry summer and hot sun. I grow mine in tubs this way I can keep them watered during the summer and pull them out of the sun in the hottest part of the summer. Good luck growing them Hazeleyes, they are a lot of fun. If you leave the seed pods on them later in the summer they open and expose a cluster of black seeds that look like a blackberry.

Blackberry Lilies (Iris domestica) have gotten bounced around a lot by taxonomists (witness all of the synonyms listed in the database), but it is currently considered to belong in the genus Iris. In that sense, it's a true iris.

Bonnie is correct that you probably can't cross it to a "regular" iris (bearded, siberian, etc.). However, people have been doing crosses involving Iris domestica, in particular crossing it to Iris dichotoma.

Naturally Hilarious! , the results of these crosses go by several confusing names: Candy Lily, Pardancanda (combination of Pardanthopsis, the old name for I. dichotoma, and Belamcanda, the old name for Iris domestica), and Iris x norrisii to name at least three.

Iris norrisii is the preferred name at the moment:

This picture is pretty typical:

There quite a few in the database

Species Iris (Iris domestica)

Some of the Iris x norrisii hybrids are really attractive.

I'd buy Heart of Darkness in a heartbeat if I could find it for sale.

So do they come true from seed?

I would assume the hybrids don't, but can't say that for sure.

Iris domestica is essentially a wild plant that has been taken into cultivation (and commonly escapes back into the wild). Its seeds will normally grow into plants with flowers that are very similar to those of the parent plant, but every once in a while you might get lucky and grow one that has distinctly different flowers.

Mine are all the orange ones with the red dots. They do come true from seed so I guess they have not been crossed with another iris plant? Perhaps someday I will grow a different looking BL. I sew the seeds back into the tubs they are in and they also multiply from the roots. Everyone that sees them when they are not in bloom ask why I have irises in pots and tubs. Everyone that sees them when all the flowers are gone and the stems are holding fat looking 'blackberries' want the seeds. lol
