I recently purchased what was referred to as Canna sp 'Pink' here: http://www.thewatergardenshop....

While there are a lot of cannas with pink in their names, I could not find just plain old 'pink'. Is Canna sp 'pink' an actual recognized plant or just a name that this nursery uses? Also, I am not sure that it is even 'pink' as the flower is actually more salmon-toned in color:

Are there any suggestions as to where to post the photos? I also tried to find a general listing for canna sp (there is one for canna without the sp extension) but cannot seem to locate it either. Thank you Smiling

"sp." is an abbreviation for "species". It's what nurseries use when they have no idea which species of a given plant they may be selling. "Pink" isn't being used as a cultivar name, it's just a generic reference to the color of the flower (more or less Smiling ).

This is probably the best place for your photos:

You might ask customer support on the website of the provider.

They might know more than they wanted to put in the advertising 'blurb'.

Maybe it was bred from some named, registered cultivar of a certain species (which I think is legal as long as sexual propagation was one of the steps).

Or, if different Canna species cross-pollinate, the statement of all its ancestry might be too long for a catalog blurb. Or they might not want to tell "just anyone" what their recipe is, but MIGHT tell a hobbyist.

That is a good idea and I will do that. It is listed as a "tropical water canna" but not listed as C. glauca (the aquatic cannas). Longwood gardens crossed C. glauca to several different terestrial-type cannas, producing the Longwood cultivars. Looking at this one (growth habit, leaves and flowers), I would not be surprised if this is the same type of deal.
