June 14, 2016 UPDATE. I still haven't been brave enough to try grafting. But I don't suck at rooting plumeria any more.

A little updating now after three weeks.....


This is the Kapalua one, doing very nicely after three weeks. Took the support tape and bamboo spikes left the wax tape on it will come off in a few more days.

This is the one from the above series. As you can see it is looking fine.

can't help but notice the blooms of Tobas fire behind Stuart.

I tried this again this weekend but I think I missed a couple steps. I should have re read this before I did my grafting. By the way, where can you buy a grafting tape? I don't like ordering supplies online so if you can recommend a store it will be helpful.

Has anyone tried grafting plumeria buds?

Ararajuba I tried grafting but I only have 1 successful graft compared to my 10+ experiments.

What do you mean by buds? The inflo where the flowers will bloom or the bud for new growth?

Bud grafting is done a lot in Thailand. A friend here tried it once but unsuccessfully. Here is a picture.

Oh I did try 3 of these because I read that it was another way to multiply your expensive collection but my bud grafts dried out unless than a week and the host plant now has ugly gouges

What's the root-stock, Mark, and what's the scions?

The root stock is a NOID that I've had for about 3 years hasn't grown anymore just leaves out..leaves don't get any bigger than about 10 inches and only has flowered 1 time small flower too...the cuttings i grafted on to it are Kaiulani..think I spelled it right lol...

What exactly is the point of grafting Plumeria's when cuttings are so easy to root? Is there some benefit to mixing the root-stock with a different scion?

If the root stock is a NOID that isn't growing the way you want it to, won't it 'stunt' the one you grafted to it? I don't get it...

The main reason for grafting is to get an already established, strong root system. In my experience a grafted plant will be at least a year ahead of a rooted cutting in development.
The root stock does not affect the growth of the scion.

Doesn't the very fact that it is a year ahead indicate that the growth of the scion was affected? I apologize for my confusion. Maybe its just too early in the AM and the fact that I have to fast before my back is injected today.

By the way, every single graft of those seed-pod bearing plants failed. There were five of them. As you remember, it was recommended to do this last October/November. Neither the root-stock nor the scion rotted though. The scions did dehydrate. I'm now rooting those scions. I have a feeling I will lose all or most of them, but I had plenty of those cuttings besides the seed-pot ones.
