Is this a mutant (I've seen pictures of flowers doing this), or is there a variant that grows like this?

Thumb of 2014-08-25/ofm/24d990

Also note that it (and actually, most of the semps around it) is labeled "sedum"...seems to be a thing around here! Hilarious! ...or is it actually sedum??? Confused I don't know - they all looked pretty sempy to me...

Wow, what a nice find. To bad they don't have a name tag to identify it.
They are all definitely sempervivum, and a lovely fasciated one in the middle. That does happen occasionally, some varieties are more prone to fasciate than others.
Like Kevin Vaughn's S. 'Fuzzy Wuzzy'.

I should have! Unfortunately I was just on a "scouting run" and didn't have any money at the moment and now... school is back in session so no car for me. No idea when I can get back over there, but I figure it's gone, gone, gone.... Glare

But now you know these guys are out there somewhere and to keep your eyes open!! Also to make you feel better, it would only look good for a year or two and then bloom out! (meaning the offsets most likely would be uncrested)
My Zorba bloomed out this summer, it was triplets connected, 2 bloomed and one didn't so I cut that one off after the others bloomed) I tip my hat to you.
