Everybody loves them so much, but they only sell 3 kinds, right? (Grandiflora, umbraticola, oleracea.) Where are the others hiding? Does anybody ever buy seeds from somewhere of the lesser known species?

Are there any perennial Portulacas? Can't find any info about any of them not being annuals.

I'm in mid-south AL, near the FL border. Are there other Portulacas I could find out in the wild? (Besides P. oleracea, grandiflora, umbraticola, pilosa, amilis?) These are the ones I know and have seen in person to date, half of them thanks to this forum.

Which Portulacas have you spotted out there, whether nearby or elsewhere in the world?

Let's help each other get to know these cool plants better!

Becky knows so much more about these plants than I do. Hoping she will be along later with more info. Thumbs up

I ask myself those same questions Tiffany. I saw a wonderful double color (it's posted here in plant files) one year and was so excited you'd have thought it was Christmas!

I truly don't have a clue where the rare ones are. Grandiflora, umbraticola, oleracea may be the big boys but there are others. Maybe a google search?

Check this one out! Double Portulaca (Portulaca Fairytale Cinderella)

It would be fun to find photos for the plant files here. Maybe I will try one a day but for me it's like eating one cookie. Or one anything. Hilarious! Once I get started.....

In 2000 I bought several plants and put them together in my cement bowls by the pool. That same summer some were cross pollinated by my friendly bees and I had one bloom with three pink and one white and one half and half. I have hard copy photos that I will someday scan to show you. Hurray! Lovey dubby

That's quite attractive! TY for sharing the link. There are definitely tons of store-bought cultivars I've never heard of. Next spring I want to buy more even though those are all either P. grandiflora or umbraticola. I'd like to find some of the other species, but looks quite unlikely in AL.

According to USDA plant database, P. amilis isn't even listed as being present in AL, but does mention Sesuvium portulacastrum, a similar plant. Hope I do notice/recognize it if I see it.

...I guess if folks knew the others well, where to get them, they wouldn't be rare!

So true! I was at Lowes on Thursday getting paint and went to the nursery area . . . not one single purslane and only a few portulaca. It is nearing summer's end but in Phoenix, Arizona summer weather hangs on much longer.

I think mail order may be the best way to find some exotics next year and we can all help one another. Group hug
