This afternoon I was out checking my fragrant hostas for "degree of fragrance", at least according to my sense of smell! The fragrant ones are in full bloom right now while most others are finished. I noticed 'Irish Eyes' is in full bloom and with very beautiful flowers. So I took a sniff and to my amazement the flowers are fragrant! If anyone in this forum grows 'Irish Eyes' and your plant is in bloom, would you take a sniff tomorrow and report if you find it to be fragrant? It is not on any of the lists of fragrant hostas, and its parentage (Beatrice x Reginald Kaye) does not indicate any plantagenia background.

I specifically collect fragrant hostas and I always check the Hosta Registration booklet every year for new fragrant hostas and also for any that have a fragrant parent even if the registrant does not mention flower fragrance. And I buy any I can find that have a fragrant parent so I can check them for myself ... a number of them, e.g. 'Red Stepper', have turned out to be fragrant!
Comparing Irish Eyes to others, it is less fragrant than 'Summer Fragrance', 'Sugar and Cream', 'So Sweet' and 'Guacamole'. It is more fragrant than 'Flower Power' and about the same as 'Invincible'. These are just some hostas growing near 'Irish Eyes' and not back in my fragrant hosta glade, some that I have planted in several locations.
