Chicken portraits are remarkably difficult! I wonder how the real poultry photographers do it.

Fall is on the way, although it doesn't feel like it here yet.

Very nice. It is plenty cool here today and really does feel like fall. Way too early though so I am pretty sure summer will return.

My tomato plants are still pumping out the tomatoes although production has slowed down. Zucchini is about finished. Too much mildew on those leaves for the plants to last much longer.

What a coincidence......I took some pictures of my chickens a few minutes ago. They do refuse to pose for a portrait but here are the best......

You are clearly a better chicken photographer than I am: great background, individual chicken, facing the right way, posed, and everything!

I wish I could let them free range but they eat my plants, they love brunnera foliage. They also scratch up the flower beds and "mess" on my drive-way so I only let them out for a few minutes in the evening while I gather the eggs, fill the feeder, and give them clean water. Then I holler "chick, chick, chick", and throw a little soaked bread into the coop. They love the bread and rush into the coop and I lock them up til the next day. Think I will make an omelette for breakfast with some of yesterdays eggs.

Some nice chicks there! I never think to take pictures of my chickens, but I will have to do that one day. Mine free range, and once in a while they get into the flower beds and I have to shoo them out. Those black sex links are really good layers. I think many of the cross breeds are. They seem to have a lot of high bred vigor. I have a vew Austra Whites now, and boy they are good foragers and lay lots of really big eggs. I don't even have to call them, they see me coming with a bucket of feed, or a pail of food scraps and they come running, and follow me. It's fun to watch.

But Paul you are fortunate that you are allowed to have chickens. Here we can not keep them even penned up. Illegal. I know some people have told me to get them anyway but I am not willing to break the law. About my only lawbreaking is jaywalking. I even sit at red lights and wait even if it is obvious that no one is coming and I am in the middle of no where.

I let my hens free range during the afternoon. I have one hen I call the 'weeding hen' - she follows me around wherever I go in the yard. She's recently started following me into the barn and porch areas, which is driving my husband nuts. He's not big on animals in his shop.
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

Well we finally got some really good rain this week. Unfortunately a lot of it came down in an inch-an-hour deluge. A couple more of the drought killed trees fell even though there wasn't much wind involved, and, yes, one unerringly landed on a fence. So I spent much of the day cutting it up and trimming some low limbs off the roof of the barn and the hay shed. I also discovered a leak that I need to plug tomorrow before I forget where it is; it was dripping into the feed room. It isn't the only leak, just the only important leak. I had previously regraded part of the back barnyard to keep the rainwater from flooding the chicken coops - that was only partially successful so more to do there too. Oh, yes, and I found out the my rubber boots are no longer waterproof! Sometimes a little bit of weather goes a long way, but the pastures look wonderfully green for this time of year!

I wear the knee high rubber boots to feed the horses when it's wet, but I have found that only the right boot will get a leak. In nearly 25 years, I have only had the right foot boot get a leak. I tried years ago to keep good left one in case I had a left boot leak, but it's never happend. Wonder how one can explain that, and no I'm not one legged! Rolling on the floor laughing
