Kevin, can you tell us where this lovely silvery color comes from, this time of year for 'Stuffed Olive'?


And such a beautiful delicate pink bloom?


I was downsizing the colony and came across this triple rosette. It is growing just like a heuffelii. All three were coming out of the same crown. I had to split it in two, but left two of the together. The one on the left is a double rosette.

I have one of these but I think only one chick. Still recovering from last springs rains. I need to go check that one. Lynn, sounds like you are really working over your raised beds. Stuffed olive is a beauty!

The two beds I've finished thinning look almost empty. So odd. By next spring/summer they will be filling out into colonies again.
I was really taken with the lovely soft silvery color of 'Stuffed Olive' today.

The cross for 'Stuffed Olive' was 'Olivette' X 'Malbyi'. The cross was made to make Ed Skrocki angry (well maybe not angry but with a good laugh). Ed had sent me 'Olivette' before it was introduced and it's still one of my favorites because of its unusual color, However, my thinking was that the olive had to be STUFFED so I crossed it to a red. There were several green/ red bicolors in that group but 'Stuffed Olive' had more the shape of the olive too.

Where the silver comes from I have no idea. 'Olivette' was from the massed bee seed that Eed collected so we have NO idea on its pedigree. Too bad as it is such a great plant.

Last year I self-pollinated a stalk of 'Stuffed Olive' to see if I couldn't get the green more olive and the red more retained throughout the year. We'll see if I got what I want.

In the data base we have 'Gloriosum' as the pollen parent of 'Stuffed Olive'.

Yeah I knew that 'Malbyii' was no longer the accepted name. There were two reds that were circulated from Malby. The one that was Latinized to his name I knew was a misuse of this and Sanford did the same with one of his. What i used back then was also called "Malby's #2", which you say has been renamed 'Gloriosum'. It was one of the few that retained its color a bit longer. I don't remember it being a bicolor, more of a solid red, at least in spring in MA. Al of the seedlings in the cross to 'Olivette' were bicolors, most with the wider, flatter form. 'Stuffed Olive' was the only one with the more "olive-formed" rosette, so it got the nod as an introduction.

Olivette has not grown well for me for some reason I have tried 3 times, and it is the first semp to croak once the weather turns wet! Oh well, I just have to enjoy it in other people's yards!

Add extra grit/gravel to it's planting site, and put lots of grit under the base of the leaves. I have several I have to do this with.
Also add lots of course sand to the planting site. Makes for faster draining soil.

Well maybe this next year I'll give it another try!
