I hate losing plants....I know they are "just plants" but when you nurse them along and baby them and get them to grow, bloom, and be pretty and they die....it's like losing a friend..... Crying

It says "caudex not raised" which I'm assuming means the "bulb" part is under the soil.... did I read somewhere that you can gradually raise it up if you want??

Thanks Smiling

I preparation for my new plants arriving, I was wondering about the pots to plant them in... I see that they have a shallow root system and bonsai pots seem to be the recommended way to go.

Which would be the better pot... the really shallow on or the bit deeper one??? Or something different.....

I would prefer the first photo of the bonsai container..the plant is still small. And yes, you can raise the caudex a bit, just enough not to topple over..oh, that would be so much fun to see what is forming below Smiling

OK... I think I'm done... got one more!!! LOL

Thumb of 2014-10-14/klc/add456

That will give me a red one, white one and a pink one. Should be good to start Hurray!

No problem with the CAPS John...I'm getting old too....easier for my eyes to read!! And I always try to proof read--catch sooooo many mistakes!! Rolling on the floor laughing

I was worried about the pot being too shallow....don't want the plant to get top heavy and topple over. I guess I'll just have to see how it goes. Lots to learn! Rolling my eyes.

Reading the post. Kim, you are too funny. "Well, I think I'm done".
That sounds like many of us. Now I have so many and I will not say. Good for you.

I think with the pot, for me it really depends what I end up with under the soil when I raise mine.
Sometimes they have quite a deep root structure and many times wider.

Rolling on the floor laughing You're right Rick!! No plant person is ever "done"!!! Guess it would have been more accurate to say "done for now"!!! Winter is fast approaching Crying and I do have some troubles keeping my plants going in the house during the cold weather (dry gas heat) so I don't want to get too overloaded. Gonna try a grow light and humidity tray in my basement this year and see how that works. I'll see how they winter over and go from there. I'm sure there will be more in my future!!

I'm going to have to keep an eye out for pots that I think will work....kinda short and "squat-y"....never had need for those so I'll have to get a new mind set. But that's half the fun!! nodding

OK... sorry to be driving you all crazy with this stuff but I value the opinions of those who know ....

Was thinking (outside the box) about the DRAINAGE ... DRAINAGE ... DRAINAGE issue with DRs and "light bulb moment".... what drains better than a colendar??? So looking around, I found these....

I think the white one would nice in this.....(4 3/4 inches across)
Thumb of 2014-10-15/klc/20b6a7

and the pink one in this since there is just a hint of pink in the design...(7 inches across)
Thumb of 2014-10-15/klc/680c22

Would line them with coconut fiber stuff and use the cactus etc mix.

What do you think....and TY so much for your patience and input!!! Lovey dubby

Ohh..love the 2nd one! Actually I was thinking about using those too one time when I was at Home Goods. It will be very pretty indoors when the plant is in dormant mode. Outdoors..well, as long as it is not too windy in your area..so it will not topple over easily.

Whichever container you choose later, just remember to use porous media, the containers you are showing are glazed, inside and out, so even with drainage holes below, it will take awhile for the media to dry.
