Like many counties we have a fair this time of year and the local bee club is involved. Hope to make more people aware of bees and their benefit to the community.

I'm having a hard time locating bees in my neighborhood. i have a lemon tree that i don't think was pollinated plus some vegetables.
i want to plant some different flowers that will attract bees. can you help?

Broccoli flowers attract a lot of bees! Of course you have to let some of your delicious edible florets develop into flowers instead of harvesting and eating. But they are total bee magnets.

If you have a lemon tree, you are probably in FL or CA? Now is a great time to plant broccoli, and plant enough that you can let a plant or two go to flower, and still have enough to harvest and eat. I plant out transplants at this time of year and also plant seeds of other varieties for an ongoing harvest. My Earth Box holds 4 plants, and I let one go to flower while eating from the other three.

@belleshere, if you can you tell us what part of the country you reside and garden in I'm sure you will get some suggestions on bee loving plants for your area.

Here in Florida where I live, Honey Bees, Bumblebees and Carpenter Bees seem to love Pentas lanceolata, Lantana camara, Clerodendrum paniculatum, Magnolia and many other plants; and as dyzzypyxxy stated, Broccoli is a great vegetable plant for attracting bees.

Bees need flowers... they work over annual flowers, perennial flowers, flowers in trees, even things that we hardly think of as "flowers," like the small asparagus flowers. The more you can provide, for as much of the year as possible and in the greatest variety possible, the better. They need nectar, they need pollen, and they will go where they can find those things. (Plus, of course, all those flowers will make your yard look nice!) I rarely see honeybees in my yard and garden, but we have lots of bumblebees and ground bees that are happy to do the pollinating chores around here.

Oops, we almost forgot that bees need water, too. A very shallow pan of clean water with some pebbles/small rocks or even a few pieces of pine straw so the bees can drink without drowning.
