I would think the name says it. Wild Flower as in any flower that grows naturally in the wild.

Jay and Catmint,

Thanks for your help and thanks for a link for a list.

You're right, Jay, I should've thought of that way: "Wild Flower as in any flower that grows naturally in the wild." *Blush*

I tip my hat to you. Thumbs up

Well, the list that Catmint provided is very nice, but it includes plants such as African daisy and many others not native to the U.S.
I guess that a plant doesn't need to be native to our area to be able to grow in the wild, but maybe we should be sticking to natives.
You can find the plants native to Kentucky here,

The photo contest category is "Wildflowers and Natives" so any wildflower would be acceptable.

I know, I was noticing that as well! On the other hand, if you pick up a 'wildflower' seed mix, a lot of these same flowers are in it!

Prairie Moon has some nice *native* wildflower offerings.

For telling whats native or introduced/exotic in North America I tend to use the USDA site: http://plants.usda.gov/java/

But yes, for the contest, since it says "Wildflowers and Natives" I think they are open to naturalized exotics.

The tricky thing to remember when planting is not all wildflowers are native. pick flowes native to your zone when planting otherwise it could do more harm then good .

many many terrible plants were brought over and planted because they looked pretty or had some value at the time, purple loosestrife, common buckthorn and garlic mustard are primie examples in MN..
