I've had this on the Plant ID forum, but thought I'd put it here as well. Bought this spring at Wal-Mart without any label at all. Now it's blooming, but without any pups so it may be committing suicide. First photo was taken in June; 2nd photo in October; the closeup today - plant is still growing at 5'10". I want to label it 'Kalanchoe luciae' based on the bloom. What do you think?


Edited to add these photos taken today. It finally topped out at about 6'2". I think it has passed peak bloom now and still no sign of any pups. The lower leaves are drying up and falling off now, but that may be the result of changing habitat from outside to inside the closed porch. It's really hard to maneuver at that height and it's really unstable. The pot isn't large enough or heavy enough to counter balance the growth.

Yup, it does look like Kalanchoe luciae. Maybe it will still try to make pups once the blooms are over...right now it may just be busy for the blooms.

Absolutely gorgeous! AFAIK, you've ID'd it correctly.

I have a plant that looks just like yours but it does have pups growing up from the bottom. Never had this plant before so I don't know how to harvest the baby plants. It was outside until the weather started getting cool and I brought it inside to my sunroom. Does anyone have an ideas on when and how to separate the pups from the main plant. Any help would certainly be appreciated.

This plant is Kalanchoe thyrsifolia.
The mother plant will die after the flowering; however,
It will make many 'keikis' once the bloom is done.
You will need to thin them out if you want them to grow big.
These plants love Hot & Dry.
It can be propagated from leaf starts.

Bob, if the info here is accurate, your plant has to be K. luciae with those reddish leaves:

If a big grower like San Marcos can admit their mistake, It must be correct.
So I have K. luciae.
Certainly is easier to say and spell.
I have told dozens of people the wrong name.
Seems more people have asked me the name of this particular plant than any other.
Now I have to correct that.
Oh Well... so is life :-)

Glad to share what seems like good info. Did it make you want the other plant too? LOL! That's how I felt when I read that, would love to find its' twin!

I kind of like the red edges to the K luciae. The yellow flowers of K thyrsafolia do intrigue me, so I will be on the lookout for it, now that I know the difference
