Well here we go - a pic! First few lilies of the season snuck up on me. Nothing great - Fire King looking small and tired in the bright sun. I should have given it fresh soil and a larger pot. But it means summer is nearly here! Hurray!

Lots of fresh green in your picture, Della. Everything looks great! Cold and getting colder fast here in the States. Finally got all the seedlings and clones put to bed for our winter. Great to see some green at your place! Hurray!

Thanks guys. Smiling

It's lovely to be surrounded by green. The big trees in the background are eucalypts endemic to my new garden. They're beautiful.

Do you have koala bears in your eucalyptus? They are adorable but I understand they smell awful and are cranky little creatures. Your roses are to die for.

Koalas are only native to mainland Australia. We have plenty of possums though. Big Grin

The main rose in that pic is a David Austin cultivar called 'Grace' if I remember right. It was given to me and my daughter to celebrate her birth 7 years ago. Really needs a good spot in the garden as it has gotten terribly hungry in that pot. The dark red one is a seedling of 'Climbing Sympathy' from my own childhood garden. I like roses with personal meaning. Thank you. Smiling

Yellow Cocotte and an unknown asiatic. Interestingly neither the anthers and filaments nor pistil have developed.

What I find more interesting is your Yellow Cocotte. Not the double petals, the irregular dark edging on random petals, or the accompanying morphing stamens.... that's all, well, icky to me. Whistling But it seems not to be a singular anomaly that stem under some of the flowers, especially the terminal flowers have multiple, well formed leaves. Not sure if that a good thing or bad thing, but it is most interesting.

I think Yellow Cocotte really is a monstrous plant, in that various organs are 'monstered' versions of themselves. It seems to come with the lack of pollen... filaments act more like petals, a stem sprouts fully developed leaves where those little itsy bitsy ones would do.... Not sure it has to be that way. It wasn't so pronounced last year, but the tendency is obviously there in this cultivar.

Its sister release 'Spring Pink' had as many as five carpels on many flowers last year. On the plus side, whatever genetics involved in making everything more leaf-like, it makes the tepals last alot longer. So I guess they have met breeding goals for good vase flowers... for non-lily growers.

I was curious about the pollenless breeding line and black etching, but I don't much like this variety. Maybe someone else will take it home and love it.

Here's Golden Gleam (in the seedling bed! Rolling on the floor laughing ) opening this morning - a very young plant sown last spring from Darm Crook's seed from the exchange:

I love these little lilies; grown L. pumilum before, but this is the first time I have tried Golden Gleam. Yellow Bunting seedlings hopefully will flower next summer too.

Later in the day:

First pollen grab of the season! Hurray! Couldn't leave it out there in the weather.

At first I wondered about the form of that, then I scrolled down to the third pic..... Thumbs up

It will be interesting (someday) to see the difference between Yellow Bunting and Golden Gleam grown in the same situation.

I'm looking forward to seeing them together next summer. Hopefully all goes well for both and I can share some pics.

I'm really looking forward to spreading the pollen around and seeing if anything comes of it. L. cernuum var. album was a reluctant pollen parent for me last year. Pods would set but then dwindle. Most contained nothing but chaff, but I have 3 or 4 seedlings from one pod that are just hairpinning now. I planted all those chaffy pods later in spring, hoping the weather conditions would be kinder.
