Make sure you do not over water, they do not need as much as other plants,

I agree You can also just set it aside in a very dry and warm spot. At this time it should be getting ready to sleep..no more watering.
Or if that branch continues to soften, I would just cut it off, so whatever it is will not spread to the rest of the plant.

Might be a caudex/root problem, I still say, look. If the caudex is brown and a little soft, it'll heal being in the air. But if it's like that, and stays in dampness, it could easily rot. My experience.

I uprooted it. First look it looked ok

Further inspection found this. ...the root fell right off.

Thumb of 2014-11-12/ShadyGreenThumb/0b903b

I trimmed this as it was mushy

The soil was barely moist but we had lots of rain in early fall. It's out of the pot in the greenhouse.Gonna get to freezing in a few nights . What should i do next?

Dab a little cinnamon on that fresh cut area. Bring it indoors, find your warmest spot and let it continue to air dry. It may still scab over to heal.

I would cut the soft spot out.

Cut some long strips of cloth, I prefer cotton, as old bed sheets, and thread the strips through the roots and hang the plant in the warmest place you can find. Let it just stay there for weeks! It's had enough water for a while.

The root fell off? Then it's healing! That's good. I wouldn't cut any more right now. If you want, try a little slice in the soft spot, just 1/4 of an inch, to see what's inside. If it's mushy, and slimy/stinky, then go ahead and operate. You needn't chop all the way to firm white flesh, just get close and then rub with paper towels to dry off as much as you can. Then maybe even set a hair dryer on low, and put it far enough away that the plant is warmed, but not heated to being hot. For an hour or so. I've done this, and had success.

Once a plant is over watered, and rain is water (!) the tiny feeder roots die, then the small roots die and start rotting, and the plant isn't using the water that's in the pot, and that is rotting around what's left of the struggling plant's caudex and roots. I'm glad you did take it out of the pot. Fresh potting mix will be really good for the plant, once you repot. Don't pack the medium into the pot when you do. It should be just barely moist, and holding the plant, shake the mix around the roots. Then don't water for at least a week, so the plant can start new feeder roots. Whew, lotta typing!

Thank you Melissa and Tarev. I appreciate the hints and I will do my best to keep this one alive. I have had DRs for 3-4 years and never had this problem before.

Usually it is the timing when they get wet or damp. In summer it does not mind getting rained on, but when it starts to get cold even if it did not rain, somehow it will feel damp so that lurking potential of rot creeps in.

You're right, Tarev. I have weather here that's warm enough, but a lot of rain over two or three days, and then no sun for a few days, and there they go! I'm designing in my head benches that have a slight slant, and something to wick water out of the pots once the rain stops. Movement!

Yes, I just moved all my plants and they're sitting on a flat surface. Many have rotted leaves because they sat on that level surface, and the water just didn't drain well enough. No loss of life, they'll recover, but, hey! They look awful right now! No pruning, they will heal themselves, and then I will gently tug the dead leaves and stems off. I'll post photos in a week or so. Only sunny in the early morning, booo! Shade from the house.

Wow! A happy looking lot you got there! Yeah.. same story of my garden..I only get a few hours of good light here which is good and bad during summer, when I want the Adeniums to bask in the sun, and when we do get it expect the triple digit dry temps..which is luckily okay with the Adeniums as long as I give them good watering in summer.

Tarev, that isn't where they live! I am in the middle of moving myself from a 3 bedroom house to a tiny efficiency apartment, with two nice decks. These plants will not stay in all that shade for long! Moving is such a drag!

This is the other deck late in the afternoon, before beginning to fill with plants. It gets full sun from, literally, sunrise to about three in the afternoon.

Bet it will take longer to move all your plants than to move your furniture. Have fun, if I were closer I would help you nodding

Doris, MUCH longer to move the plants. I'm going to sell the furniture, no place to put it!
