this salvia blooms till a hard freeze..
it seems all my salvias like the cool nights in the forties
and fifties..and bloom better in late fall than in the
hot 90's temperatures from May till October here
in zone 8 ...in alabama..
Sheri how long have you grown it? Be afraid, be very afraid. Hummers butterflies love this plant, and it loves our AL zone 8 weather. I have confined it to a small area of one bed, another bed I sprayed Round Up 4-5 times this last summer. It sends out tubers, very prolific. Yours is very pretty though.
I love my black and blue, but had to take back control of my garden. It had spread everywhere. I kept a 4x4 patch and outlined that space with buried edging. Pulled up bucket loads that were outside it's new boundary. And, all this started from one plant. Enjoy. The hummers love it, in fact, a hummer came up to the original plant while I was still carrying the pot before it was planted.
@LynnHTx I got what was salvagle from my flower bed and round upped it 3-4 times. It had crocomia as well as black and blue salvia. I was able to dig out my gingers and cannas. I have thesalvia in a much small place now. Hummers love it, it's only redeeming quality.
we bought three black and blues last summer, here in seattle. they did fantastic!! I hardly think they'll be back this year though, not in our climate. I just bought two more for this summer. why only 2? because last year the three we planted darn near took over everything!!
