And suddenly this week it is cold! We are getting to burn some of the finely seasoned firewood provided by the dead trees retrieved from nearby fences over the summer. I still do not have my shredder back, nor have I finished my hot wire replacement project. Now I need to be winterizing the outdoor piping - a job I hate and normally not planned until January. You might think that once insulated, the pipes would stay that way but, no, the animals won't leave them alone. If a horse, cow, pig, or dog can reach it, the wrapping will be mutilated. (So far the cats and chickens have not been found guilty.) While I'm on the subject of critters: the gopher activity here has been at an all-time high this year. The pastures look like a mine field and the front "lawn" is worse because the dogs think they can dig out the gophers and turn tiny holes into giant pits. Riding around on the tractor is a bone-jarring experience and the gopher mounds probably dull the shredder blades at double the normal rate of wear. The huge brush pile in the south paddock - the result of clearing the fence line before installing the new feral hog resistant fencing - was scheduled to be burned on Guy Fawkes' Day, but rain postponed it. However I finally got it all burned; it took 36 hours for the last big trunk to finally burn completely. I hope this winter isn't so bad that I find myself wishing that I had some of that wood back to heat the house!

Harvest is done...well, the guy that the SU helps is. Having waterers freeze up, the guy was called last week, but has not got the parts yet. The SU is not amused.

I am already tired of this crap. Had snow already, and single digit temps this morning, along with a nice stiff west wind.

Well, now it's back to normal November temperatures here - at least temporarily. Unfortunately it is too late for many plants. My fall tomato crop froze even though I covered the plants with tarps, and all the grass I was hoping to graze into the winter that was standing in the pastures is now wilted and dead looking. On the bright side; I got some of the winter rye over-seeded and it will probably get an early start. I spent yesterday afternoon adding boards to the bottom of the fence around the boar's pen. Twice recently he stuck his nose through the stock panel fence and got his tusks stuck such that I had to use bolt cutters to free him. I cut the fence but was tempted to lop off the tusk instead - in this case, Anna, I agree, pigs can be pretty dumb, especially if they are male. It is supposed to rain for the next couple of days so I plan to interrupt my wire replacement project, and plant some shrubs I rooted years ago in pots, into the ground outside the fence of the north paddock to form a wind break. The wet soil ought to be easy to dig. I hope those of you buried in snow get a weather change soon too!

I have to work at the other sale barn today writing health papers.

The electrician FINALLY got the cattle waterers working correctly yesterday. Well, we HOPE he did. I guess we will see about that when the SU goes out later. It is only 3 degrees, if my remote temp sensor is correct. Ick!!!

One last November item: Never rush a chicken. Wanting to get Thanksgiving dinner on the table at a reasonable hour, I started evening chores early - or tried to. None of the other animals minded being fed/put in early but the chickens were not ready for bed. Several were still puttering around after I had finished with everything else, and when I tried to guide them into the coops they upset their friends and soon there were chickens everywhere! Herding chickens is only marginally more productive than herding cats... Thanksgiving dinner was NOT early.

Silly chickens! Didn't they realize that you had important things to do and not spend time rounding up chickens? Hilarious! Grumbling
