The cats knocked over one of my mother of millions plants and broke the top out of it. Do I just need to toss it or will it root? I have never had this happen before. The plant was pretty tall and slender so it broke easily. I don't know what to do.

Hi Lori, here is a piece on Kalanchoe daigremontiana - Mother of Thousands.
http://www.plantoftheweek.org/...

It states that the plant will propagate by stem cuttings, but must be kept dry. Shrug! / Confused
There are several Mother of Thousands/Millions species of Kalanchoe. Maybe this will help.

Good luck with your stems. Smiling

Thank you. Strange, but I will see what happens. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I do that on purpose all the time. Just let it dry overnight & stick it in the pot. It should still bloom. I just did one the other day.

I agree it will come back. I do that too when it grows so leggy. Cut and stick to the soil. It roots faster if it is warmer, but as long as it is dry even a little cold, it will be okay, just a little slow.

I stuck it in there, so far it just looks droopy, maybe it will perk up in a few days. Thank you for your comments, that was a new experience for me.

Sending good vibes!

Taking a cutting is why I have Kalanchoe x houghtonii at all. There was an invasion of them in the B&B we stayed at in New Orleans in April, '13. As we were leaving, I snapped the top off of one growing in a crack in the parking lot, laid it in the back seat. When we got home, I laid it on the front porch and accidentally forgot it for a couple days, baking in the sun. I stuck it in the ground, and in about a month, I snapped it off again and put the tip in a pot... By now, this plant is in a bunch of my pots, from snapping the tips periodically, and from all of the babies that form at the leaf edges.

If you remove a healthy leaf and leave it (away from water or soil) in a bright spot, that will force babies to begin to form. Here are various Kalanchoe leaves about 4-5 weeks after being removed from mama plants. Be very careful, Kals are very addicting!

Edit: Oops, in the bottom right of that pic, are some Graptoveria leaves.

Tiffany, the one in you photo is the species I had in the 80's. They were quite prolific. The flowers were lovely Thumbs up When my husband would touch the flower stem, little droplets would fall. He would joke saying "no wonder they are everywhere, they water themselves". Rolling on the floor laughing

I have a blast doing that, then trading/sharing the plants in spring and fall. This pot is all cuttings and babies, about 9 diff kinds of Kalanchoe.

Great idea! I only have a couple of different ones, the "alligator teeth" and "donkey ears" is what I was told they are called. Would love to find some others, these plants just fascinate me to no end.
