First...please don't beat me up for not being "environmentally conscious", because I am. That being said, has anyone used the No Pest Strips in their GH? I have parrots and people who raise parrots have used them forever in their aviaries. If you've got birds, you've got bugs. They work great for ants, flies and gnats so I was wondering if anyone had experience with one in the GH. My Cajun Hibiscus is a pest magnet. Now it has what looks (at this point) to be the beginnings of white flies. I hung one of the strips out there so we'll see what happens. If I don't see improvement quickly, and I mean VERY quickly, the hibiscus has to go.

I would think it work fine, Holly. (and sometimes you have to take stern measures for pests, so no beating from here. )

Hope it works for you. I don't allow Hibiscus or Brugs in the greenhouse for just that reason.they are white fly/spider mite magnets. IF I have to bring them in for protection they go in the barn.

I have birds, a turtle, and dogs, and yes, the occasional bug. I use a curly fly tape. It has no chemicals as far as i can smell and is very sticky. Recently, iacquired a new plant. She had been in the GH for the past 5 days. Yesterday, i noticed gnats in the pot. It's sitting outside right now A fly tape will be in the GH by the end of today to get any gnats that flew out of the pot!

I use those yellow, sticky strips. I don't think there is any pesticide on them though. The flying bugs are attracted to the color and then they are done! I probably have a half dozen hanging in each greenhouse.

As a side note, you haven't experienced life until your macaw gets wound up in curly fly paper at 11pm. Fly tape is never allowed in my house again. I get shivers just walking near it in the store. If it ever does happen to you...peanut butter will get it off. Or vegetable oil. But peanut butter is better. Dawn dish soap get the peanut butter off. It wasn't a fun night.

I got rid of the moths by freezing all their foods at least 24 hours before "serving". We had a bad infestation of moths once. ONCE. EW! I am glad winter is here. Ther are hardly and pests here in the winter months. The GH is reversed. I get bugs in there only in the winter!

No Pest strips are easy to use for plant pest. It contains an organophosphate like Vapona, so don't handle the strip. "It is effective against mushroom flies, aphids, spider mites, caterpillars, thrips, and whiteflies in greenhouse, outdoor fruit, and vegetable crops. It is also used in the milling and grain handling industries."Wiki If you have a bad plant you can shut it up with the strip in a shed or trash bag overnight.
When I have a problem in the GH, I use a Hot Shot Fogger. They have a synthetic pyrethrin, which has a very, very low LD50, or mammal tox factor.Safe for pets, etc. You do need to turn off any ignition sources, propellent is isobutane and very flammable. I corresponded with the company and it is an acceptable use. 1 "bomb" will treat a 10x12' room or in this case GH. I have seen no ill effects to the plants and I have some sensitive ferns, orchids and tropicals.

Thank you Eric. I had good luck with the strip and also sprayed with ortho rose spray. The fogger is good to know about in case of a multi-plant infection.

Engineer or chemist? You sound like you might be either.

My major in college was hort. about the time the pesticide applicator laws were passed. I also was working for a florist with locations in Pa. and NJ, so I tested and was licensed in both states. I prefer organic gardening but organic ornamentals not so much. The only flowers I eat are Nasturtiums and orchids served with lunch.

I did apply myself to the chemistry that applied to horticulture and medicine the other stuff is gone with the wind.

Great knowledge to have. The warnings on things are sometimes so over the top that you don't know what may be actually safer than urban legend reports it to be. I opt for organic pest control on veggies but organic fertilizing methods sure don't compare with good old chemicals. In the greenhouse...I suppose I could always wear a respirator in there if I had to

I use them in all my deer stands (spiders, ants & wasps) and they work great. In the greenhouse I use Raid Fumigators. When activated it fills the room with a dry white cloud of penetrating smoke & leaves no oily residue. One unit treats up to 16' x 20'.

It's time for one in my GH. I hoped I wouldn't have any gnats but they are showing up.

Put two of them in the GH. One in one end and the other at the other end. You get them coming and going!

No help to offer with your original question; just some comic relief:
This old bird got her hair caught in one of those curly fly strips out in my little zippy greenhouse; I made some very loud and unladylike squawking noises until I managed to unhook the darn thing from the ceiling and find some scissors to cut it out of my hair. Whew.

I can imagine, Greene. I know how hard it is to dislodge a lizard from some of those sticky strips and no longer will put them on the flooring of my greenhouses.

Sorry this is way off base from the original question, but Ken you reminded me of something. When I visited my Mom in Florida I was doing some general maintenance which included painting her air conditioning unit. The paint was not dry when a lizard leaped onto the surface. Oh, what a tricky business it was to get him unstuck and send him on his way...at least the paint was the same color green.
