We plant tuberoses, each yr. and they are glorious in the fragrance garden. Little care ins needed. Just good draining is necessary.

Do you dig up the tubers and overwinter them inside?

I have tuberose in pots in 6a. They are growing but haven't bloomed, yet.

I have mine in pots too, they will start blooming soon if they don't cook first. LOL

I dig them up, let them dry out a bit, and put clumps in paper sacks and roll them up and pack them in boxes. Has worked for 3 years now and I have more and more and more.

I have mine in the ground and they are sending up a bloom stock. I put it out in the ground cause, to me they STINK... ain't that awful??? But the bloom is so pretty...

Hey Andi, I do have to dig mine up each Fall due to our weather. Yes, I could leave them in the ground but with our cold temps and snow when they come up the next yr. they are inferior. Sometimes, I think it's cheaper just to buy new ones. Lee

Charleen, is your in the ground, or did you winter it over indoors? I kept mine in the garage over the winter, then placed it outdoors. It did bloom for me. Thanks for sharing. I just wonder if it will winter over and bloom next year if I plant it in the ground. Any recommendations. I'm in zone 8a.

It is in the ground now, but I may need up a couple bulbs just for back up...

Hi, I am brand new to this website, and looking around I found this forum, thought I could add a little bit. I love tuberoses, grow the Mexican single, tried the double--didn't work out, so stick with this one. The scent is powerful, but in the evening, when it really gets going, we love it. I have brought the flowers into the house, and it is the same as at night, the fragrance comes out in the evening. We have a number of clumps of these, all grown outside in the ground. Some years they are great, others not so, weather must be the big factor on that. Posting a couple of pictures, thanks for looking. Avedon

I grow mine in pots. I did not get blooms I think because my summers were not long enough or hot enough not a problem this year.

I bring the pot inside and keep it in the laundry room and give it a sip of water once a month or so. It never dies down totally. This seem to insure I saw blooms at least by the end of July beginning of August.

This is the process I use with all my tropical plants. I try to give them the environment of tropical or at least a zone 8 or 9. It is not totally dry in soil in the ground so I do not treat the bulbs plants to dried out in a bag.

My reasoning is if a plant can live in the ground in higher zones and unless you live in the desert there would be some moisture a certain level temp which is above freezing. So I try the do a zone growing in the pot without disturbing the root and natural growing conditions.

The tuberoses are beautiful. I bought my first bulbs this past late spring but did not put them in the ground yet. Of course, I'm still trying to figure out where would be best to put them!

Do you have yours in full afternoon sun, dappled shade, or morning sun only? That'll help me figure out where would be best.

Avedon, your flowers are indeed beautiful. I have a small clump that I overwintered in a pot in the garage. It put out 1 bloom stalk and the scent was wonderful. I also overwintered a larger pot in the garage, but I planted it in the ground this spring. I'm hoping that it'll bloom this month. I am undecided as to whether I should dig up the clump to overwinter in the garage or not. If I remember correctly, a clump that I put in the ground in a couple of years ago did not come back. What would you suggest?

Hi Deborah, I'm no expert on this, since we have never grown tuberoses in a container of any type, only in the ground. I can tell you that the ones that do best for us --- and this is also for Carey--are the ones that get the most sun. We also noted that summers with fair amounts of rain seemed to produce the most flowering stalks. It would seem to me that you might want to overwinter yours inside since you lost the ones in the ground. Of course, you could experiment, leave some in the ground, some inside and see what happens. Just a thought--most of us don't want to lose our plants, do we? Good luck with your decision.

Thanks, from me too, Avedon. I will leave some in the ground overwinter and see what happens. The ones in the pot bloomed over almost 2 months ago. I'm still waiting for the ones in the ground.

Let me just add a couple of comments. Our tuberoses don't get sun until nearly noon, and are usually in shade by 3-4 p.m. The ones on the west side of the garden seem to do better since they get the sun first and also the first shade. We do mulch our tuberoses and the mulch stays on year round ( we use pine needles). If growing tuberoses in the ground, mulch them and see if that will keep them from dying. So much of gardening is trial and error, guess we all know about that.

Thanks for the clarification. I definitely have to move the ones that I have in the ground in the fall. It's in full sun and looks stressed most of the time. And I'll be sure to mulch them well with pine straw this winter. Hoping for the best.

So here they'd probably do best along the front side of my house where the dear would eat them. Poo.
