What makes you want a particular succulent the most?

Is it colors, size, form, blooms, ease of care, growth habit, price, rarity, texture etc...

For me it is form, growth habit, and texture.

Adam,
What an interesting question! I think for me is aesthetics, but more importantly ease of care. Just because I like the way it looks doesn't make it easy to care for. Hilarious! Now what I like in a plant with respects to aesthetics, well, I don't have a clear-cut answer for that. All of my cacti and succulents look different. Whistling

Ease of care, growth habit and price...cannot afford some too expensive. I love to try smaller ones first, gives me time to understand how they grow. But I cannot start at seed level..I am too lousy in that aspect.

Oh right, price! I'm with tarev, I won't buy something too expensive.

Great topic Adam. What attracts me is color first, then price. I am not just cheap, I am CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP. The plant has to be EXTREMELY pretty to get big bucks out of my purse. Nothing over 10.00 for me for small plants.

A garden plant I will spring upward 100 dollar but not for a tiny plant in a pot.

I won't spend more than $10 on any plant. Hilarious!

Oh I have spent more than $10 on a plant..not a succulent though..oftentimes a nice type of orchid..or a more mature plant like Clivia. But succulents are fairly easy to source around here thankfully. But it is just so hard to move away from a very nice specimen especially at the nursery I frequent...you just don't see those in the local stores...I try to set a limit for myself..otherwise..I will be too broke already. Hilarious!

Tarev you are in a different situation. Big specimen that I would have to move inside for the winter and a chance of death because because of a 6 month inside accommodation for tender plants is one of the reasons I will not pay more. A plant that is perennial to my climate I have paid upwards of 100.00.

If I only had to have them indoors for a few months I might would pay more. But half a year not a chance of me paying a lot of money for tender plants.

I like unusual plants (why I like some succulents) I also like a plant that looks neat and well seated in the soil, but then I also like overgrown out of its pot and growing all over - so I think I like extremes. I love my haworthias right now because many of them have what's called cathedral tips, meaning that they are transparent so you can see through them!! Its an interesting aspect of that plant! Aloes I like because they almost seem to be dancing in slow motion - reaching from their pots and stretching, I don't notice other plants doing this like aloes. Thumbs up
Its fun reading what inspires others about plants... and yes, I am on a budget so I have to not go to crazy, and I have space limitations so that keeps me in line even better than the budget thing (Paypal just increased my credit amount- Great, now need more willpower again!) Yes I have spent more than $100 for a plant. Usury they are hardy trees like Jap. maples or Tri-Color Beech or my tri-color ash maple. My chocolate mimosa tree which was way cheaper so I purchased two seedlings. My Blue Atlas Cedar. Also garden order of many plants for well over $100, does that count. Still if I drank or smoked, gambled or played cards, I would have spent more by now than on my plants. And I gave many of them away to friends and family over the years to spread the joy. The friends I have made right here giving and taking knowledge is priceless. But boy do I under stand the spending part. Some times I have trouble sleeping after spending a lot. Money could have gone to do so much more.

Next summer I want to buy a variegated Haworthia truncata and the cheapest I've seen them for is a few hundred dollars.

I justify my plant bills by not buying shoes for that year... Rolling my eyes. and now that I don't go out much I don't need as many shoes, so I can spend $$ on plants.
It's also a blessing that there are so many generous people on ATP. I can't explain the fuzzy warm feeling I get when somebody sends me a box of plants or seeds. Lovey dubby

I guess I'm fortunate that I'm not a shoe lady. Hilarious! But, being as cheap as I am, I spose that doesn't go to much use not buying shoes.

Adam - you can find H truncata variegated for cheaper than a couple hundred??? The ones you're looking at must be specific cultivars, and if you don't care the cultivar, it is very possible that you can find the same coloration in a different cheaper variety! I tip my hat to you.

But, but I only make the promise to myself and I do not have a problem breaking promises I make to myself. So just promise yourself that you will not buy shoes you can break the promise nobody will know. Rolling on the floor laughing

'Foliage' color and flowers! And I like to have potted plants that enjoy having the sun shine on them. My older plants, the leafy tropicals, mostly prefer to be shaded, much more mellow, low-key plants. Sux are high-energy, bold, shameless attention hounds.

A parallel appeal is the tiny size of some of them. The HUGE popularity of mini gardens recently has taken hold of me, and I can't get enough tiny plants and mini gardens. This is good for someone who wants more plants, but their house isn't growing...

And, since I've collected most of the plants that I want that I've seen in stores for decades, I'm so glad to find these guys the past few years.
