Red Lion variegated was named "New Rhumba" by Squaw Mountain Gardens.

The wrong plant is'nt the wrong 'Lowes 60'? It's really similar.. and a lion lowe... It's very suitable? Maybe I misundstood something :-D

Besides 'Red Lion' is similar to 'Rosanna'. Its from the same breeder.
It seems 'Rosanna' don't produce variegated daughter rosettes.

I have a question for you Erwin. If we have it as 'Red Lion Variegated', which is a sport of 'Red Lion', who should the hybridizer name be?
Or should it simply have 'A sport of 'Red Lion' in the entry for hybridizer?

Then, how should we handle the two entries of 'Red Lion Variegated' and 'New Rhumba'?

This topic on 'Red Lion Variegated' and 'New Rhumba' is open for discussion. Smiling

Someone on ATP (Cliff maybe @cahac) told me that SMG told him that 'New Rhumba' is a red lion sport, so if this variegated one is from the real Red Lion than it is probably 'New Rhumba', if its from the NOID Red Lion, than it is a NOID (my opinion)
Lynn you said Patty has the correct plant, and I think this variegated chick came from hers so I would say its "New Rhumba"
Thumbs up

Thank you for mentioning that Greg, about 'New Rhumba' being a sport of 'Red Lion'.

I went back threw my correspondence with Don (SMG) and found the information. Hurray!

Don Mylin said:'New Rhumba' is a sport and not a hybrid. I found it amongst the cultivar 'Red Lion'. I find a lot of these, but they are rarely stable. Of the dozens that I have found and set aside only 3 have turned out to be relatively stable. All will revert to a degree which is true with any sport.

Mystery solved. Thank you Erwin for bringing this up. Group hug
So should we combine the two entries in the database, 'Red Lion Variegated' and 'New Rhumba', moving 'Red Lion Variegated' into the 'New Rhumba'?
I know the ones I got from SMG have remained variegated.

Lynn I don't know if each 'sport' is an individual and different? If sports are unique then I guess they shouldn't be combined since they're different, otherwise they are the same plant from different sources in my opinion!
Good research by the way!! nodding I tip my hat to you.

I would think they would be different too. I bought New Rhumba and it does not look like my variagated Red Lion. Plus I'm having a hard time even keeping it alive, and RL is pretty hardy.

If you read Don's above statement, he only found 3 that were stable. Those three are what 'New Rhumba' came from. It took a long time for him to narrow the sport's attributes to a more stable form.

A named sport should have its own entry. If there isn't a place for parents in a custom data base then a comment could be made providing information about the "parent" from which it grew.

Hi CErlank.
I don't know of any sempervivum nurseries in South Africa. You may be able to order them from Erwin https://www.semper-vivum.de/
Or SMG Succulents in the United States If you have questions about sending orders to your country, please send your question to [email protected]

Addressing the topic of 'Red Lion Variegate' and 'New Rhumba'. I have been growing both of these plants for over a year now. It is obvious that the plants have different characteristics.
New Rhumba has much narrower and fuzzier leaves, has smaller rosettes than 'Red Lion Variegated'. 'Red Lion Variegated also has very shiny leaves, New Rhumba has an almost fuzzy texture.
