Where Do Cloves Come from?

Where do those little dry, hard, brown sticks we poke into hams come from? Seed pods? Vines? Trees?

Although you won't use a tree-full of cloves, this recipe for turkey gravy is my favorite. I had to renew my supply of cloves in Nov. and paid $8. for 3 oz. Enjoy your tree!
This can be done the day before roasting the bird.
Put the turkey giblets & neck into a large pot containing 1 cup white wine to 2 cups water or broth. Add an onion cut in half and stuck with 10 cloves, a carrot & a few sprigs of parsley. Add 1 tsp salt & 4 peppercorns. Bring to a boil & boil for 1 minute. Cover pan, lower heat & simmer for one hour. Strain broth, cook down to 1 cup & season to taste. Add to turkey juices in roasting pan. Thicken with flour before serving.
This makes a wonderfully flavored gravy and it's a beautiful golden brown from the drippings. Setting it in the fridge will bring the fat to the top for skimming.
