Here we are at the beginning of a new year.
I am so excited about this new year, presenting us with new cultivars created by Kevin Vaughn. Watch Young's Garden Center. http://www.youngs-garden.com/g...
Here is just one of them, and it is a real chameleon in color changes.

Also, Don Mylin of SMG, has some wonderful hybrids: http://garden.org/plants/group...

Here is one of Don's 2012 introductions, a real beauty.

Happy New Year everyone!!

I'm thrilled that we're actually getting some snow today! Only 2 or so inches, but enough to give my semp babies some insulation for the cold temps coming our way. November started off with cold and snow, then in early Dec. everything melted and warmed up. Next week the highs are only supposed to be in the single digits and up until this morning - no snow! They have been bare in temps in the teens many times over the past few weeks but so far look OK. I think it's better than sitting in melted snow for weeks.

'Gwen's Rose' is gorgeous! I'm really looking forward to Kevin's new introductions to be available this Spring. Hurray! Hurray! Thanks for the teaser picture Lynn.

Julia, I'm sure you'll find room for a few more, but hopefully you don't lost any/many from all the rain.

Audrey, looking forward to seeing pictures of your babies.

Kate, definitely leave room for lots of new semps in your new garden. Big Grin

Hope the New Year is full of happiness, good health and lots of semps for everyone!! Group hug

Lynn,

Thanks for including a picture of 'Gwen's Rose'. As you note it is REALLY variable in color. It goes from the phase you showed to a green with brilliant red bases, to a dusty pink, to a paler rose center on green and back again. It gets to about 4-5" in diameter and has very good health. It is out of 'Killer' X self and has some of the same color phases as its mm but more pastel and with much wider and bigger rosettes. At the clinic last year i gave away some of the 'Killer' seedlings to others to use in their breeding programs as 'Killer' has been a magic parent for me. This spring the group from 'Fuego' X 'Killer' should be mature enough to evaluate.

Chris, I'm SO glad that you're getting snow cover. I remember one New years Day in MA when it was -32F but luckily my rock garden was under 3' of snow. Didn't lose a plant! However, I'm not wanting to move back to those climates. it's going to be 55F here on Wednesday and I can play in the yard. Yes you can hate me!

Kevin

Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! Don't hate you but yup, very envious! Only 4-5 more months and we'll have temps in the 50s!

Kevin, I look forward to getting more photos of the amazing 'Gwen's Rose'. It looks very different right now in it's winter colors.
I am really excited to see the results of the 'Fuego' x 'Killer' seedlings. I can only imagine what might come from that cross.

Chris, I was told this morning that Minnesota did not have a white Christmas this year. That is really weird. Seems we might be in for a very unusual weather year.

Nice yellow color coming on Julia. I look forward to seeing how much yellow/gold it takes on this year. Mine have not picked up that color very well.
So far my Xanthoheuff is the brightest gold/yellow.

Oh that really is a beautiful yellow! Another one to try and track down here!
My only true yellow - 'Alchemist', which was new last autumn, hasn't done well this winter. I had 3 rosettes, 2 are dead and the third only has the growing tip still alive. I think maybe I damaged the roots when I transplanted it. That's on my re-order list for the Spring when Frenwood reopen their order books.

I've decided not to order anywhere other than Fernwood from now on. I get less in terms of numbers of rosettes but at least I'm sure of correct names and that they are hardy plants then. Many that I got from local garden centres early this summer have done really badly this winter. It hasn't been good semp weather conditions, but all of the last Fernwood batch (with the exception of 'Alchemist') look very good, even though I was very late in the season to plant them. I wonder if many of the others I bought were grown on under glass? Or grown quickly/forced in some other way? It seems too much of a coincidence that they all look very sorry for themselves compared to the very happy Fernwood batch.
