It was windy and in the 60's here today ... not much bird activity but I did see a dove or two perched in the bare Crepe Myrtle tree:
Thumb of 2015-01-05/plantladylin/ba7d4e

I went to Walmart this afternoon and got pic's with my camera phone of an Osprey nest. Didn't realize until I'd downloaded them to my laptop that there was an Osprey on a branch to the right of the nest. I cropped the second photo so the bird is more visible:

Yes, thanks for the new thread Lin. Silly Osprey. What a pretty dove.

I need to start taking pictures to contribute to this forum. The birds are eating me out of house and home. At my hanging feeders I have Goldfinches, Chickadees, and House Finches. I've made a table feeder out of an old aquarium stand with a tray for ground feeders and have Juncos in a variety of colors, sparrows which are so similar that I can't decided which are which, and Eurasian Doves. I saw a Morning Dove briefly yesterday but a Eurasian drove it away. The Eurasians are taking over from the more timid Morning Doves. I have the aggressive Scrub Jays and Quail picking up feed that makes it to the ground. One of the mixes I bought contains a lot of corn which the birds don't eat but the deer which are wintering in my neighborhood clean that up. Bird feeding seems to be popular here. When I was grocery shopping yesterday the lady ahead of me in line had a large sack of Black Oil Sunflower seeds and the lady in the next checkout also had bird feed. What does everyone feed?

Wonderful Margaret! You too Paul!

Paul, I feed a no waste finch type mix but it has some big peanut pieces in it. I don't do straight sunflower b/c the squirrels will be on it like white on rice & I don't relish encouraging them. I also feed nyjer thistle for all the finches -- goldfinches, house finches, the little white crowned sparrows love it too, indigo bunting. I also hang a suet block ~~ seems mostly the cardinals go for that, once in a while a Carolina wren will be on there.

Wow Margaret, look at all that snow! The birds sure look cold but they are so pretty against that scenery; the Goldfinches are gorgeous and what a picture of that Flicker in the deep snow ... have I mentioned how I love the pretty nuthatch! Lovey dubby

Paul, so glad you've joined us here and will be sharing photos! It sounds like you have a nice variety of birds visiting your feeders and how wonderful that the deer come for the corn ... I'm surprised it isn't squirrels! Green Grin!

I buy bagged birdseed as well as the black oil sunflower seeds but I also put raisins and raw peanuts in the open tray feeders. I used to buy peanuts in the shells but some of the birds leave shells everywhere so now I try to find the raw peanuts already shelled. I sometimes add raisins, bits of mango, dried blueberries and more peanuts or peanut butter to the store bought seed. I have a couple of suet feeders out and I buy suet cakes for those and sometimes I will take a large bowl and with a heavy wooden spoon stir together a mixture of bird seed, peanut butter, raisins, raw peanuts, bits of fruit and oats and put it in the suet feeders as well as smear it on tree branches ... the birds love it.

Thank you Ann. I tip my hat to you.

Paul, I have 7 feeders, and 3 suet cages, I feed black oil sunflower seeds favored by all the birds, Niger, wild finch mix, and I have a caged feeder for the small birds and I use hulled sunflower seed in it, that is very expensive and I am not going to let the squirrel get to it. Glare Also the cheaper seed with some cracked corn and larger seeds that the Steller's jays like.

So far no problem with squirrels here yet. I sometimes see or hear one in the summer. I feed Niger, Black oil sunflower, a wild finch mix, a cheaper feed with corn..........I never see birds at my suet cages. I put bread ends and crusts in the tray feeder and something is eating them, I think the Jays. I also have 2 large containers of fresh plant material on my porch that I made for the holidays which contain crab apples and I am pulling off the apples to put on the feed tray and something is eating them. I also keep water near the feeders which is a problem when it is so cold. I bought a metal dog dish and the frozen water drops right out so I can add fresh warm water. Some of the birds were bathing yesterday......

Hi Paul!

I only can afford suet at this point. I have 3 suet feeders. One is the type that can hold 2 cakes and can accommodate the Pleated Woodpeckers.

When I did feed seed I put out black oil sunflower seed, Niger for the Goldfinch, and Safflower seed. My cardinals & house finch loved the Safflower seed but lots of people do not have much luck with it. I would also put some corn out for the crows & blue jays. I also had a peanut feeder. Plus the suet feeders!

I miss the variety of birds that I used to get in the yard but I don't miss the mess and having to clean up. When we are done with kids at home maybe I will put out seed again......maybe.

Here is a very bad picture of a Doe at one of the feeders. I got a new camera with nice lens's for Christmas and one of my Grandsons is going to help me learn how to use it and I should get better pictures. There was a lot of chaff under the feeders on the snow so I took a shovel and put a lot of it in the garbage......

Claudia,

Wow, you got some great shots! I love the beautiful Flicker and also the Cardinal and Junco and what a cool shot of the Pileated at the feeder! I see and hear the Pileated but they never seem to perch anywhere long enough for me to get decent photos.

We are visiting San Diego this week and I got a couple of bird pic's as we were out and about today.

We spent a week in San Diego and got back very late Tuesday night. These are all photos taken while we were in California. We stayed on Shelter Island right on San Diego Bay and were walking along the park one day and noticed an Osprey at the nest site. It kept calling and calling and I figured it was probably calling to its mate. Sure enough, the next day we saw two at the nest. I think the male is the smaller of the two and it had caught a fish for breakfast. They were beautiful birds and the nest platform was only about 10-12 feet high so we had a great view with them so close! They had a really neat informational sign posted at the site ... Florida needs to do something like that.
