We had a bunch of old concrete blocks laying around the farm for years so today decided to start building our Semp & Succulent wall. It has been pouring with rain for 2 days so it was a good project to start, being rarely so cool here in the summertime. The basic construction is there. I will fill it with decomposed granite soil.

The wall is on the north side of the house, so it should be a good place to overwinter the more sensitive semps, and to the left (west) is an enclosed courtyard with my Weeping Cherry and Garraya and a huge Claret Ash over the top so it will be sheltered from the wicked west in summer but get morning to midday sun.

Once the wall is finished I will fill with soil and chisel out some little nooks in the wall to tuck some semp babies into, paint it, maybe put random some tiles on it... may plant some tall and cascading succulents in the top, not sure. And put some more blocks at the base with wider holes for bigger semps and my Black Prince's. Should be fun when shopping time comes for some new semps to put into it. Can't wait Hurray!

Plant IDs are Virginia Creeper, Hibiscus, 2 of my rare pines in pots and Eucomis. There is a little semp bed I started you can see at the base of the hibiscus in the before picture. Lovey dubby

Any suggestions for planting semps and more in a wall like this are welcome!

Thanks! We've had 2 days of torrential rain so I have brought all my new still-potted semp babies indoors. I have some more arriving by mail this week so I can start planning then. it will be interesting to see how they grow in this kind of structure.

The other plant is some form of Baby Sunrose or Iceplant. I got it as a small unlabelled cutting in a succulent cutting pack I bought off eBay so I don't know yet until it flowers. 😗 there were 70, all unlabelled. I still don't know what some of them are!

I wonder if it is one of the Aptenia (Mesembryanthemum cordifolium). I have a beautiful variegated one that Julia gave me last year.
Wow, 70 cuttings?

Ooo I do have the Baby Sunrose, I have 20 cuttings that I am striking :)
Thumb of 2015-01-17/Sunlover/3cb5cd

This is the one in the wall, closer. It is VERY shamrock green and the leaves are very shiny like a waxed floor. I can't wait for it to flower.
Thumb of 2015-01-17/Sunlover/cdc3ac

This one I still haven't identified. It has a yellow flower like a delosperma but the leaves have me stumped. It is GORGeous. It looks like a coral. The leaf detail... Lovey dubby

So many succulents and semps are sold here without names or with incorrect ID.

Hurray! Lovely Patti. Some of those would be beautiful in your new wall. They would be so pretty cascading over the wall.
That last photo is very interesting. Hope it blooms soon, maybe that will help to ID it. How big is the container it is in?

I will post a pic soon! It's already getting so cold here and hubby has decided to put an extension on so I basically just put my potted plants on the wall. With autumn, my Virginia Creeper is dropping red leaves all over the place and I can't keep up! lol

Bev that sounds lovely. It is beautiful here today. Hope it is like this tomorrow.
Making plans to build a small wall in the bed under the front room window, and plant succulents in it. I'll be using the cement blocks.
