Pretty day today in northeastern Indiana; there's frozen fog on all of the trees, snow on the ground and no bitter wind to speak of, so I took a few pictures of our gardens here, to share.
South hillside garden-
This bed will have an area of spring blooming bulbs, just in front of the standing stone; with phlox, crocosmias and roses, among others, in summer.
Scented lilies reign in this bed; along with a few miniature roses, peachy-pink daylilies, and a couple of clematis on the fence.
The new rock garden is front and center here; with perennial chrysanthemum tops showing through the snow. The lake is in the background; surrounded by frost-bedecked trees and wildlife shrubs.
One of the biggest joys of the winter gardens here is an assortment of ornamental grasses; left standing, they're a lovely focal-point for us, and safe cover for the birds.
View from the kitchen; this part-shade area is filled with everything but the kitchen sink, although the decorative pump handle may lead you to think otherwise.
Ferns and a baby daylily bed nestle in under the shelter of the evergreen tree.
The Christmas tree does double-duty propped against the bird feeder post; providing our visitors extra protection from bitter winds and marauding hawks.
And finally, an area that some of you may have seen before...
...the west window hugel/log bed. This bed is filled with spring blooming bulbs, cascading veronicas, foxglove and lavenders, and lots of lilies just in front of the evergreen hedge. At the far end of the hedge are newly transplanted hydrangeas, and just to the south of those are a few more tall decorative grasses to protect them; along with providing more motion to the garden and overall appeal.
Shorter varieties of yellow heleniums to the front of the standing deer will (hopefully) carry this garden on into autumn.
Okay, so there's a few of mine. Have you pictures and dreams to share of your midwestern winter gardens?
