to brighten your containers. I do many perennials in my containers but like to add a few annuals to give them more color during the summer. I saw this cruising the net.
Hope I can fine this in the spring.

I guess average on the price of the seed, BUT, they sent it in an envelope with no plastic tube so all the pelletized seeds were crumbled. We complained to them. Same with a snapdragon. They are replacing them, but that doesn't really help with the issue if they send them in an envelope again.

I hope the seeds are not to hard to germinate.

Its great to see they are starting to have seeds for Calibrachoa. I haven't had them yet, simply because I grow all of my annuals from seed. Those are still a bit pricey for my purse, but I bet if you start them early you can take cuttings and triple the numbers. Thats often what I do with the wave petunias.

I am trying Painted Tongue (salpiglossis) for the first time.

If you tapped the link I put there, you will see I bought 5000 seed for 4.99 - I will certainly have more than enough to share if you want some.

I admit that when I bought those large packs of seed - I was thinking I could trade some away. I haven't been involved with the piggy swap, but I have been reading up on it and may go for it next year.

Geof,

Last year was my first try with the salpiglossis. I did three trial areas: 1) tops in sun, roots shaded by other plants, 2) entire plant in compost and sun, 3) tops in sun, roots shaded deeply by inanimate objects (in my case it was logs). Number 1 almost lived to bloom, number 2 never did much of anything and died early, and number 3 was fantastic...well beyond my expectations.

Just food for thought as you head into your first salpiglossis endeavors. Smiling Best to ya!

I'll be right there too, as I'm growing several different salpiglossis this year. Love 'em. Lovey dubby

Thanks @chelle

I had read that they like cool weather. Last year I grew snapdragons for the first time which also prefer cooler weather and they did really well, but we had the coolest summer we have had in years.

The ones that did the best received good morning sun, and then shade after 2:00, the were fronted with densely planted impatiens which shaded the bottom 1/3 of them. That may be the way to go with the salpiglossis.

How tall did yours get? any need for support? My snaps did.

Mine (transplants, not direct sown) were about 20" or so. They were surrounded by logs, but I didn't really see that they were leaning on them. I thought they would flop...that's why I had logs on the (front) mostly shady side, too...just in case. I'll find a representative picture for you when I come back in from doing evening chores.

Ooh - nice, thanks for posting those.

The other annual I am trying for the first time this year is Kochia - I tend to get easily swayed by beautiful pictures. Not quite sure yet how I am going to use it.

Me, too; love them but they don't love me Crying I tried them from seeds last year and got few to germinate but then they died. So I'm trying again - (seeds were from trade with Woofie) few have germinated so we will see.

Hey Geof, want to trade? or postage for some of your salpiglossis?
