Dunno about Houston, but here it's sneezing and wheezing season called "cedar fever." When the Junipers release their pollen, usually beginning in December, probably 70% of Austin starts hacking! The old timers like to tell newcomers that if they don't have cedar fever, they will eventually. The pollen covers cars, driveways, and clothes. It gets in your hair and sticks to your shoes so that you take it inside and spread it around. Some people start their allergy shots early in December to minimize symptoms through the season.

Wasn't yesterday gorgeous! So nice to get outside without a jacket. Today and tomorrow will be sunny and in the 70s! Then we'll get a little rain and temps in the 50s. Going to enjoy it while we can!

I'm enjoying the beautiful morning by raking my neighbor's leaves out of our front yard again. Oh well, it's good exercise!

Molds have been high here too and those always get me. Two weeks now. Not usually as bad here in Georgetown as Austin but this time they have hit me hard.

That little bit of rain we were supposed to have has turned into a gully washer! The low water crossings were closed earlier. Twenty two in the area are still closed. I watched the rain water gush out of the top of our rain tank. Hope the rain helps the bulbs I planted late!

@Ecscuba , are your GHs a source of your mold misery? We ran around closing the hoops here when the wind picked up Tuesday night. We haven't turned the heat on in any of them yet, after the warm up last week. I guess tonight will be chilly enough to add a little heat. It's 43 in the little GH.

@bubbles yes, I've had some of that whitish mold stuff frequently on my plants in the 6 x 8 Harbor Freight GH - (not on the GH itself). But @Drdawg mentioned I needed to run fans at least 8 hours a day and that has helped substantially. Also, someone posted the info about using peroxide (the 3% from the store is mixed 1 tablespoon to a cup of water) and spritzing the soil with that. That has cleared it right up. I didn't put it anywhere on the GH itself though, cause I don't have a problem there.

Interesting that the little popup GH on the patio (bought from Amazon for $100) hasn't had much of a mold problem at all. It gets lots more sun, so I don't know if that impacts it.

Yes, gullywasher - we've had over 1.5 inches of rain here in Gtown just overnight and still drizzling. Happy to see it though ... it can keep coming and fill up Lake Travis Smiling

@Ecscuba I've never had a fan in the hoops or GHs. Maybe there's some reason for it, but I don't know why I haven't seen mold. When it gets warmer, we open the side of the hoops and let them "breathe." During the cold weather, I've not seen any mold. I've been keeping some Brugmansia cuttings potted up in the little GH without too much heat. I figured since they really liked cooler weather, they'd be happier in there. So far, most of the cuttings have leaves now. I'm keeping an eye on them.

I checked the LCRA totals for rain and it looks like we've gotten 2.73" since midnight. We're closest to Barton Creek mall rain gauge. I have garden club tonight and I'm making DH go with me. I hate driving on Mo-Pac during rush hour, worse when it's raining during rush hour!

In January, the highest mountain cedar count for San Antonio was 27,420 on the 23rd. That stuff is on most everything outdoors...ew! But at least we get rain on occasion to wash some out of the air!

Yes, send it to the Gulf. It hasn't been that bad here in the Austin area and we're hoping it's soon entirely gone. Now, if the molds would only disappear. Crying

@Ecscuba I don't know if it would help with suppressing mold, but I use coffee grounds in nearly every pot in my hoops. I haven't had a problem with mold. Did have brown scale on one plant but that's also gone now that I dumped a few filters worth of used grounds into the pot.

Well, Mountain Cedar's been increasing in the S.A. area for the last few days. Heavy, but at least not extremely heavy. We're in deep cedar country out here. Don't forget mulberry, elm and ash...which are in the light to moderate counts in S.A. Our Arizona Ash is ramping up toward something, probably not blooming yet, because there's no bees around it!

My Chinese Elm tree is the prettiest tree in my yard. It is loaded with itty bitty translucent white blooms. I love it. But it too is probably clogging my sinuses as we speak. Shrug!
