NOT a silly question...

The Dollar store. Cheapie, plastic ones. But, always put it on the floor and lean on it before you buy it. If it doesn't sag much under your (relative) weight, it's a keeper!

The square weave ones tend to be a bit stronger. Need to hold up wet potting mix! But, give it the old lean-on test, first. I tip my hat to you.

And, buy your 1" Schedule 40 INSIDE DIAMETER (thinner walls) PVC tubes in 10 ft. lengths from HD or Lowes. You can use a handsaw or hacksaw (easier), or your DH can cut 'em on a band saw (easiest!) to 22-24 inches each. Depends on what you're growing in your eBuckets. Bushy leaves like tomatoes or cabbages, use a longer length to find the tube above the leaves. For broccolis, eggplants, cauliflowers, 20-22" is fine.

A ten-foot length will run yah 2.50 with tax! I tip my hat to you.

What about flowers?? I have plants in containers but not like your buckets. I was thinking of using flowers in buckets...
But there will be tomatoes too, I love tomatoes and maybe cucumbers. Home ground so much better..

Charleen,
Just about anything you can grow in the ground can be grown in an eBucket or ePlanter! There are very few limitations. Except for veggies like potatoes and beets and carrots, but only because of the limited space in a 5-gallon bucket.

But there are self-watering systems made from Rubbermade tubs that have more space and depth for growing stuff like potatoes and beets, etc. These homemade tub systems are referred to as HEBs (homemade Earthboxes).

But, look at my other tutorial, and try the ePlanters for your flowers, cause you can convert decorative planters into a self-watering system.

The beautiful part of the eBucket / ePlanter system is portability! Move 'em when the sun moves, move 'em in when the weather's inclimate.

"I like to move it, move it!" Hurray!

What a cool idea! I tip my hat to you. must find buckets with "hats" Most of my tops have been pitched and holes have been drilled in the bottom of the buckets I already have. Thumbs up for this

At least you guys are in different hardiness Zones!

I tried to use a thread once, about growing tomatoes in "Zone 8". Well, in Texas Zone 8, they have completely finished the spring crop and their tomatoes are expiring from heat before MY Zone 8 is warm enough to leave transplants out over night!

And this year, my nights stayed too cold for weeks after their days were too hot.

Just an update to let the followers of this thread know that I'm about to embark on a gardening project at two different schools. Each 4th grader will build and monitor their own eBucket, and grow one veggie! The selection will include: cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, or Brussels Sprouts. I'm providing the seedlings!

They'll also start several community flats of spinach and lettuce (since these will produce a faster harvest for the kids). They can have a living salad garden and harvest microgreens, and learn to thin them out toharvest mature plants, too. Making them wait 60-90 days for a cabbage or broccoli to mature might prove a bit much to ask of them, so we'll give them some nice greens in the meanwhile.

Ya'll pray for me, hear? Lovey dubby
