Sneaky February started before I noticed.

I'm still busy with winter cleanup. It's a little more difficult this year because we had no frost this winter. My zone 9a garden had a zone 10 winter, so nothing froze. I therefore have to be more careful pulling weeds because they're surrounded by tender perennials that usually get pulled out at this time of the year. If this frost-free winter continues, I won't have to buy any new petunias, pelargoniums, or salpiglossis this year.

We have no roses with February in their names, so the thumbnail photo is Aquarius.

What a strange year. I am having a harsher winter that you are , Toni.

I would love a couple of 50 degree days, or even 40 degree days, to melt the ice in my gutters. They are frozen solid.

The only roses visible around here are the ones in the catalogs in the mailbox!

Andi - Actually, weather like this is very bad. Some of the trees are trying to wake up and then we have cold snaps and it kills off the new buds. We'd much rather have it stay warm or stay cold. One or the other, not both. But it's not like we can do anything about it... but it was warmer at 7am this morning than it was at 2pm yesterday afternoon.

We are finally getting some much needed rain starting this afternoon. Flash Flood Watch is posted for tomorrow with a predicted rainfall range between 3 to 6 inches with local amounts up to 10 inches in higher elevations and on the southwest facing slopes.

I see a few roses blooming around town, I cut of all my buds and pruned everything back and there are new leaf buds on everything.
A few pictures I took the other day.

Hey, I did find a rose, Joseph's Coat! Almost at the end of it's bloom as the pretty stage was a few days ago.

I wish we could get some snow. Or even rain! It was 74 today, which is wonderful...kinda. I'm stuck inside buried under a pile of tax work. The fruit trees are budding already, which is bad bad bad. Not sure how they did that so quickly, because it was 7 degrees on Thursday!
After a quick inventory of the roses, my estimate is 50% loss. That early freeze last fall was a killer. The extended warmup forecast for this week will encourage more growth, and more freezing weather is inevitable in March.
The Austin catalog came, and there's a 25% off code (UFS) for orders placed before February 27. Maybe I'll get one of the new intros, and also a few of the OGRs they carry.

Cindi - I'm with you in that.. I'm seeing all the beautiful rain CA is getting and the tons & tons of wet snow that the NE is getting.. and we're not getting diddly squat. All my snow's melted and spring's just around the corner because the willows are starting to orange up (when they wake up for spring, their new branches turn an orangey color) and the cottonwoods are starting to swell. The maples are berrying out, I've got irises starting to poke little triangles up, one of the few Dr. Huey's that I haven't shovel-pruned actually started to show some leaf buds down near the base.. I guess that's it for cold-cold hopefully. It was in the upper 60s & low/mid 70s this past week/weekend! People were running around in shorts & flipflops! I'm not minding the mild temps, but man could definitely use some moisture. Our snowpack's way down.. I think we're down here in the city by over half. Sad We *may* get some rain/snow/mush on Tues night/Wed morning, but not holding my breath. It's barely 9am and it's already 50degs out there. This is NOT February.

Toni ...

>>>> I'm seeing all the beautiful rain CA is getting

Oh, yeah.

I am starting to get a bit tired of all of this beautiful rain. No, not really ... just tired of in inconvenience. We got 5" in the last storm and there are varying reports about how much we are going to get out this one.

It's been raining hard in my part of California for days. It's bad enough to have to time wood hauling to periods of light rain, but today I am going to have to give in and haul bags of garbage down to the carport on the street level as well as haul more wood. I am going to be seriously sopping wet before I get done.

I've put it off as long as I could .. no it doesn't stink ..., but I need to do laundry today, so I need my laundry room back ... Shrug!

Even with all of this weather, there is virtually no snow pack on the Trinity Alps. The drought is over for me, but not over for California.

Time to get moving.

Lyn

The weather seems strange everywhere this year.

This is the first year I have been up here where we have had NO snow. I don't get much at my elevation, but I do get snow.

Our lake isn't even half full, even with these storms. I checked the other reservoir reports for California. It's about 62% full. Better than last year.

We're having a fickle winter, which is pretty typical here. Mild temps for a few days, in the 40s or 50sF, then back to below freezing for a few days, and so on. The last few days of mild temps brought the first Crocus blooms and some Snowdrops that I saw yesterday, this morning there is a light dusting of snow. Seeing the first blooms is like a balm for my soul, evidence I can see that spring is on the way Hurray!

Hurray for crocus blooms. We are in a pattern of snow every two to three days. In between we get really cold temps. I am so tired of this crazy weather and want spring to get here quickly.

It's fun to open the windows and air out the house, that's a fact!
But our pond is so low that the pipe that drains the geothermal furnace froze up completely and for a few days we had no furnace. Bald eagles are here plucking fish from the pond!
As usual for this time of year, I still have a bag of daffodils that didn't get planted. Maybe I'll get that handled this week.
Not sure how I'm going to plant the roses I have ordered. I had more knee surgery in December and now the ortho doc says I need a partial knee replacement. That's my reward for 20 years of coaching soccer....plus many more years of gardening. Funny how I had less pain before the surgery than after. If I could just hold out for another year, supposedly, there's a new procedure that uses stem cells to regrow cartilage. My old dog has arthritis also, but she's smarter than I am. She just rests when she needs to, and cuddles more and never ever whines. My year old puppy does not understand why I don't want to go kick the soccer ball all day long in this wonderful weather. He actually talked the Fed Ex guy into kicking the ball today!

Cindi - I've actually been having the windows open almost every single day this month! Weird! I close them at night (don't want my chicks or parakeets to get cold), but in the day time, it's wonderful not to have a squirrelly house!! And pix are politely demanded of the bald eagles please.... Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Going in tonight for another MRI on my back. See how bad it's degenerated from the herniated disc between the last vertebra & the tailbone (L5/S1). It blew out completely a few years ago (think of a jelly donut.. you bite into it & the jelly squirts out everywhere.. that's what happened to the disk.. the jelly inside went squirt-plooey off to the left & those two vertebra just rub against each other, which is causing the sciatica because the muscles are trying to keep everything in place, which causes them to cramp up & crush the sciatic nerve to get crushed against my pelvic bone.. boy oh boy the fun of getting old!!) but I'm refusing to get fusion. I've known too many people who got their vertebra fused & they're in a billion times worse shape afterwards than before! And I can't be down for months recoopering.. I've got things to do, roses to plant, etc! Been thinking about it and, instead of putting a maple on top of my beloved Conan, I'm going to keep up with the rest of that area & put in another lilac.. thinking of a President Lincoln or a President Grevy or a BIG Tinkerbell if I can find one (I have a teeny one but I want a 5gal plant). It'll be with my Charles Joly lilacs, so I need something that'll pop with that wine color. And I can't have a screwed up back if I'm planting big 5gal plants! Plus I do have a few roses coming in from Palatine in April.. not many, just 4 for me.
